Triple H beat Sting at WrestleMania 31 in part because WWE presented the match as a climactic WWE-versus-WCW showdown. Years later, Road Dogg gave a separate, behind-the-scenes explanation: he said Triple H was expected to face The Rock at the next WrestleMania and needed to remain strong. That is Road Dogg’s retrospective account, not a contemporaneous official explanation from WWE.
How the match ended
WWE’s official results list Triple H as the winner over Sting at WrestleMania 31 on March 29, 2015. The match report describes a No Disqualification-style brawl that brought D-Generation X and the nWo into the action.

Sting hit the Scorpion Death Drop and reapplied the Scorpion Death Lock, but Triple H survived. Shawn Michaels then intervened with Sweet Chin Music. In the closing sequence, Sting used Scott Hall’s baseball bat against Triple H’s sledgehammer, breaking the hammer. As Sting charged for another Stinger Splash, Triple H struck him with a piece of the broken sledgehammer and pinned him. Triple H shook Sting’s hand after the match.

WWE’s on-screen reason: a final battle with WCW
WWE’s contemporaneous story framed Sting’s arrival as “the past rearing its head” and described Triple H’s aim as burying WCW’s legacy. DX backed Triple H, while the nWo stood with Sting, turning the match into a WWE-versus-WCW clash. WWE’s report called it “the final battle with WCW.”
That was the public storyline, not proof of the full backstage rationale. The post-match handshake also tempered the triumphal presentation with a gesture of respect toward Sting.
Road Dogg’s later explanation: Triple H was being kept strong
In an August 2022 report about his appearance on Busted Open Radio, Wrestling Inc. quoted Road Dogg saying that Triple H was expected to face The Rock at the following WrestleMania. Road Dogg said the finish was arranged with that program in mind: “The finish was orchestrated that way because, at the moment, it was Hunter-Rock again at the next Mania, you know what I mean?”
Road Dogg said the plan fell apart about two months later. With that hindsight, he said he felt they had put the wrong person over. This is a participant’s later recollection reported by Wrestling Inc. on August 15, 2022, not a formal WWE booking statement or a contemporaneous booking document.

How the two explanations fit together
The WWE report explains what the audience was shown: a faction-backed finale to the WWE-WCW rivalry. Road Dogg’s account offers a reported practical reason for the booking: protecting Triple H for a planned match with The Rock. He also said the people at ringside were focused on getting a reaction and reaching the finish, rather than on DX and the nWo trying to outdo each other.
Those claims address different things—the story WWE presented and Road Dogg’s later account of the booking plan. The available sources do not establish that the reported Rock program was the only factor behind the decision.
