Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson became one of wrestling’s most celebrated tag teams by pairing a distinctive rock-star image with fast, agile wrestling and dramatic underdog comebacks. Their long partnership, championship success across multiple territories and defining rivalry with the Midnight Express helped make their appeal last. “One of the best” is a historical reputation, not an objectively settled ranking.
How Morton and Gibson became the Rock ’n’ Roll Express
WWE’s biography says Ricky Morton and Robert Gibson joined forces in 1983 in Jerry Lawler’s Memphis-based territory. They stood out visually: long hair, flashy outfits and bandanas gave them the look of rock stars, a clear identity in a crowded wrestling landscape. WWE describes them as among the most popular tag teams of their era, though that is the company’s retrospective characterization rather than a measured popularity ranking. WWE’s team biography
Why their wrestling connected with audiences
The underdog dynamic
Morton and Gibson were often smaller than their opponents, according to WWE. Rather than relying on size, they used speed and agility. When opponents took control, the team could make the struggle feel consequential: Morton or Gibson would absorb punishment, reach for a tag, and give the crowd a reason to rally behind a comeback. The audience was not just watching a sequence of moves; it had a clear emotional role in the match.
A style built for teamwork
Their appeal depended on contrast within the match: a wrestler in trouble, a partner waiting to get in, and a sudden shift of momentum once the tag arrived. WWE’s account emphasizes the pair’s speed and their ability to rally audiences when overpowered. That combination made their matches easy to follow and gave the crowd a recognizable pattern to invest in without making the outcome feel automatic.

The Midnight Express rivalry gave them a perfect foil
Their rivalry with Jim Cornette’s Midnight Express became a defining part of their story. In a WWE interview published March 20, 2017, Cornette described the teams as opposites in image and wrestling style: “Superman needs Lex Luthor, Batman needs The Joker, and we were the antithesis of everything The Rock ‘n’ Roll Express stood for and their wrestling style. It just clicked.” WWE’s interview with Cornette
The contrast made the rivalry legible: the Rock ’n’ Roll Express’s energetic, crowd-facing underdog presentation against a team Cornette framed as their antithesis. WWE’s 2017 Hall of Fame report called it a classic 27-year rivalry. That is WWE’s retrospective description; it should not be read as evidence of an uninterrupted run of matches over that entire period. WWE’s 2017 Hall of Fame report

Longevity, championships and influence
WWE’s 2017 induction report described Morton and Gibson as partners for 34 years. The same report and WWE biography point to success across different wrestling territories, including NWA and Smoky Mountain Wrestling tag-team championships. WWE says they captured “dozens” of tag-team championships, but its profile does not provide a complete itemized total, so a more exact number cannot be established from that account.
WWE also credits the pair with influencing later tandems, including The Rockers. Their legacy therefore rests on more than a single rivalry or championship run: it includes a durable partnership, a recognizable performance style and an example later teams could draw on. WWE’s team biography

What their Hall of Fame recognition does—and doesn’t—mean
Morton and Gibson were inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame as part of the Class of 2017. The induction is formal recognition of their place in wrestling history, but it does not establish a definitive all-time ranking across promotions, eras or styles.
Cornette, their rival and the Midnight Express’s manager, offered a particularly direct endorsement in his 2017 WWE interview: “By any standard, Ricky and Robert belong in the Hall of Fame,” citing “longevity as a team, the attendance records they set, or the great matches that they had.” Those are Cornette’s reasons for their recognition; the interview provides no attendance totals or independent measurements of match quality. Why they are still considered one of the best
The case is strongest when framed through several distinct measures rather than a single ranking:
- Audience connection: WWE describes crowds responding to their underdog comebacks, and Cornette spoke of their close attention to what fans wanted.
- Match storytelling: Their speed, vulnerability and rallying sequences gave audiences a clear emotional arc.
- Rivalry: The Midnight Express provided a sharply defined opposite, helping both teams’ identities stand out.
- Longevity and success: WWE’s 2017 account cites a 34-year partnership, while its biography records championship success across territories.
- Influence and recognition: WWE credits them with inspiring later teams and inducted them into its 2017 Hall of Fame class.
These points support their enduring reputation. They do not produce a universal, objectively provable “best team” list; that judgment depends on which qualities a fan values most.
