Why Bearer turned: what is and is not established
What the storyline shows
On screen, Bearer chooses Mankind over the man he had managed for years, and that choice costs The Undertaker the match. The staging gives the moment its logic. The urn is the object the wrestlers are fighting to reach, and Bearer’s control of it makes him the decisive figure. Reading the urn as a symbol of Bearer’s former power over The Undertaker, or of his closeness to him, is a reasonable interpretation of the scene. It is not a statement of motive from WWE.
What the official account does not say
- WWE’s retrospective does not describe a personal grievance, a fear, or a strategic scheme behind Bearer’s decision.
- The official material contains no first-person explanation from Bearer. Any quotation attributed to him about this turn would not be supported by the record.

Kane and the wider Bearer history
Kane’s arrival belongs to the larger story. WWE says Bearer had hinted at a younger half-brother for The Undertaker before Kane debuted at Badd Blood 1997. That establishes the chronology of the mythology, not a cause of the SummerSlam 1996 turn. Kane’s debut came after the betrayal, so the two should not be read as one connected plan.
The 2010 Hell in a Cell betrayal is a separate event
Bearer betrayed The Undertaker a second time, thirteen years after Kane debuted. In WWE’s 2010 Hell in a Cell storyline, Bearer turned on The Undertaker to help Kane retain the World Heavyweight Championship in a match between the brothers. That is a different opponent, a different context and a different result from 1996.

For the cleanest answer to the question, keep the two events apart: the 1996 turn is the one that answered the question of why Bearer sided against The Undertaker in the boiler room, and the 2010 turn is a later storyline built on that history.
