Conservative praise for Netflix’s 3 Body Problem in spring 2024 centered on one scene: the opening episode’s 1966 public denunciation of a physics professor during China’s Cultural Revolution. Some conservative viewers read it as a warning about cancel culture, censorship and ideological conformity in the United States. The show’s co-showrunner has said that reading was not the intent, and the praise came from commenters and reviewers, not from a measured survey of conservative opinion.

The scene that started the argument

The series opens in 1966. A physics professor is publicly denounced and beaten after being accused of teaching counter-revolutionary ideas. CNN’s account, carried by WRAL in March 2024, describes the public humiliation and violence directed at alleged “class enemies” during that upheaval. The Guardian’s Tania Branigan, writing on April 3, 2024, connects the sequence to the period’s violence and to the fear and danger of speech that run through Liu Cixin’s work.

The scene is also the story’s engine. The trauma and disillusionment of the professor’s daughter help set the wider alien-contact narrative in motion, and the show then moves from the historical sequence into a science-fiction story about humanity facing an extraterrestrial threat. That structure matters for the politics: viewers who praised the show were mostly responding to a historical prologue, not to the sci-fi plot that follows.

How conservative viewers read it

BGR’s coverage from March 24, 2024 described the show as a hit among conservatives in the United States. The reaction centered on the parallel commenters drew between the professor’s punishment and what they saw as left-wing pressure on speech, including cancel culture. One viewer quoted in the reporting wrote: “To understand what the left is doing, I suggest watching the opening of the Netflix series 3 Body Problem.”

That viewer’s reading treats the scene as a diagnosis of a present-day problem, not as a historical lesson on its own terms. It is an interpretation the commenter brought to the episode, and the show itself does not state it.

The reading that ran the other way

Liberal and progressive viewers looked at the same footage and drew the opposite parallel. In their reading, the scene warns against book bans, restrictions on ideas and conformity on the right. CNN’s reporting presents these two readings as incompatible, and that is the most useful way to understand the episode’s reception: the scene gave each side a historical example to point at.

Reading Target named by the reader Where it is reported
Cancel culture and ideological-control warning Left-wing censorship and cancel culture Conservative commenters, in BGR (March 24, 2024) and CNN reporting carried by WRAL (March 2024)
Counter-reading Book bans and restrictions on ideas on the right Liberal and progressive viewers, in CNN reporting carried by WRAL (March 2024)
Creator’s stated view Historical cycles in human history, not a specific current controversy David Benioff, quoted by The Hollywood Reporter and reproduced by BGR (March 2024)

What David Benioff said about intent

Co-showrunner David Benioff addressed the cancel-culture reading directly. Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, he said: “This isn’t a commentary on cancel culture.” He then added: “But we do tend to move in cycles in terms of human history, and we’re going through a certain period of the cycle right now.”

Benioff also said there are significant differences as well as similarities between the current period and the Cultural Revolution, and that the creators did not set out to make the show a commentary on current politics. His remarks separate what the creators meant from what viewers found in the scene. They do not settle what the scene means to a viewer, but they do show that the parallel was not built in as a message.

What the adaptation changes from Liu Cixin’s novel

The Netflix series adapts Liu Cixin’s The Three-Body Problem, the first book of a trilogy the Guardian describes as a multimillion-seller at home and abroad. TIME notes a major structural change: the novel follows a single present-day Chinese protagonist, while the series builds its story around an international ensemble based in Oxford.

That change affects how the opening lands. In the novel, the Cultural Revolution is part of a Chinese protagonist’s background. In the series, the same history is staged as a prologue before the viewer is introduced to a mostly Western cast. Readers who want the source’s perspective on that history will find it in the book, and the difference is worth keeping in mind when judging how much of the political reading comes from the adaptation and how much from viewers.

The historical stakes behind the opening

The Guardian estimates that about two million people died during the Cultural Revolution. That figure is an estimate attributed to the Guardian’s reporting, not an exact count, and it is the scale the opening’s violence is meant to evoke rather than a number the show itself presents.

What the praise does and does not show

The reaction is best read as narrow and dated. It concerns mainly the first episode’s Cultural Revolution opening, not an agreed political message across the full season. The coverage is from spring 2024, around the show’s first season, and BGR’s figure of almost 600,000 views for one social media post is a count as of March 24, 2024, not a current total.

Commentators have also read the larger story through other themes, including climate risk and humanity’s choices under existential pressure. A review in America Magazine, by James T. Keane (April 19, 2024, updated January 11, 2026), praised the show as a solid adaptation of the books and argued it could use more religion, which shows that critics weighed the series on several axes at once. No poll or systematic measurement establishes how conservatives as a group responded, so the praise should be described as the view of some conservative viewers and commenters, while the scene’s meaning remains open to the other readings above.
