Coles has echoed fans’ concern that new stories could make familiar characters feel out of character. Alexander has described her own past reluctance, rooted in how closely audiences associated her with Maxine Shaw. Their ReLiving Single podcast gives the cast another way to revisit the show without writing new fictional lives for its characters.
Why are Kim Coles and Erika Alexander cautious about a reboot?
Kim Coles: new stories could change how fans remember the characters
Coles said some fans wanted the show’s characters left as they remembered them, rather than given new storylines that might feel wrong. As reported by Blavity’s Shadow and Act, she put that concern this way: “I don’t want them to reboot and write the characters doing some stuff that I don’t see them doing. Let it be.” Coles said the reaction made sense to her. It is a concern she found persuasive, not proof that every viewer—or every cast member—shares the same view.

Erika Alexander: Maxine Shaw was hard to leave behind
In a 2025 interview with The Breakfast Club, Alexander recalled that “for a very long time I was asked about reboot and I always said no.” She explained that she felt strongly identified with Maxine Shaw and worried she could not easily move beyond that association. She also said a film career might have made it easier to offset the role’s hold on her public identity. These are her reasons for saying no at that time, not a declaration that she will always oppose a revival.
Would a reboot change the characters too much?
That is the risk Coles described: a scripted continuation would need to give established characters new things to do, and those choices might clash with what some viewers believe the characters would do. The comments do not establish that a particular reboot proposal exists or that new stories would necessarily misrepresent the characters. They explain why the possibility can feel less appealing than revisiting the original as it was.

Why does the cast podcast instead?
A rewatch podcast lets the cast talk about existing episodes, memories, and production history without asking them to create new character arcs. Alexander said the format allows for extended, episode-by-episode conversations and revelations that could not happen in the same way in a reboot. Coles added that cast members were busy with other projects and described the podcast as an easy way to give fans a taste of what they wanted.
There is also a personal dimension to those conversations. In a 2025 Marie Claire interview, Alexander described the process as both laughter and healing: “It’s been very sacred because we’re laughing, but we are healing.” She said the conversations touched on events that had been divisive and hurtful, and that time and distance helped the cast discuss them less rawly. Coles described the podcast as a place to watch, learn, and reminisce—an opportunity for fans and people interested in television history to hear from those who made the show.
| Format | What it offers | Trade-off raised by the cast’s comments |
|---|---|---|
| Scripted reboot | New fictional stories for familiar characters | New character choices could feel out of character to some viewers. |
| Cast-led rewatch podcast | Discussion of episodes, memories, and behind-the-scenes history | It revisits the series rather than continuing the characters’ fictional lives. |
Has the whole cast rejected a reboot?
No. The comments above establish Coles’s sympathy for a fan concern and Alexander’s account of her own past reluctance; they do not establish a shared position among the entire cast. A Television Academy index lists creator Yvette Lee Bowser discussing the possibility of a reboot, but the indexed page does not provide her substantive answer. Nor do the sources establish that a reboot is in development or has been ruled out.
Older coverage should not be mistaken for a current production update. In 2021, ET reported revival-related comments from Coles and Issa Rae’s view that a reboot might preserve the original’s integrity. Those remarks do not establish a present-day plan or a consensus among the cast.
