Leah Murphy left Grey’s Anatomy twice, and the two exits have different explanations. Her first departure was a firing written into the show’s story in the Season 10 finale, when Richard Webber dismissed her for poor surgical performance. Her later departure was a casting matter: in September 2017, TVLine reported that Tessa Ferrer was not expected back for Season 14. That report did not establish why, and the reporting available does not confirm a reason from ABC, the production, or Ferrer herself.
Two exits, two different kinds of answer
Readers searching this question usually mean one of two things. One is the character’s exit inside the story, which is documented. The other is why the actor did not return, which is reported but not explained. Keeping these apart is the only way to answer accurately.
Exit one: Richard fires Leah in the Season 10 finale
In the show’s story, Leah was written out in the Season 10 finale. According to TVLine’s 2017 coverage, Richard fired her because her surgical performance was poor. That is a fictional, on-screen reason, and it is the only stated explanation for her first departure.
Her return in Season 13
Leah came back to Grey Sloan in Season 13. TVLine reported that the hospital rehired her after she had improved her work at another hospital. ABC’s Season 13 recap places her return in Episode 6, “Roar.” Her return is the last story development for the character that the reporting cited here documents with a specific episode.

The Season 14 report (September 2017)
On September 3, 2017, TVLine reported that Ferrer was not expected back for Season 14. An ABC representative declined to comment. TVLine’s sources said there were no current plans for Leah to return to Grey Sloan. This is a report of status at that date, not a confirmed reason and not an announcement that Ferrer quit or was dismissed.
A separate earlier event: the 2014 contract non-renewal
The Season 14 report should not be confused with a 2014 development. In March 2014, TV Guide reported that Ferrer’s contract as a series regular had not been renewed for Season 11. That report did not establish a definitive cause. It suggested a link to romantic storylines, but that suggestion was explicitly speculative and was not confirmed.

What is not established
- Ferrer’s own explanation for not returning. None appears in the reporting cited here.
- Whether Ferrer wanted to continue, or whether the production chose not to bring Leah back.
- A clear on-screen sendoff for Leah after her Season 13 return. The reporting does not describe a departure scene, so her later absence should be read as an unexplained disappearance from the available coverage, not a documented plot exit.
Claims that Ferrer quit, was fired a second time, or left for a personal or production reason are not supported by the sources cited here, and readers should treat them as speculation.
Context from the cast
Jessica Capshaw, who plays Arizona Robbins, discussed Leah and Arizona’s earlier relationship in a 2016 interview, saying Leah’s return was dramatic. In a TV Guide interview about Ferrer’s Season 13 return, Capshaw said: “Tessa’s awesome. She’s such a fun, neat, kind, talented, awesome person. So we were all just super psyched to have her back and telling more stories.” That remark concerns the cast’s reaction to the return. It does not explain the later decision not to bring Leah back.

How to read the record
The clearest factual answer is this: Leah’s first exit was a firing in the show’s story, and her later absence was reported in 2017 as a casting status with no confirmed cause. Anyone citing a reason for the second exit should name a source that states it on the record.
