President Donald Trump’s live address on Dec. 17, 2025, was scheduled for 9 p.m. ET—an hour into CBS’s three-hour Survivor Season 49 finale. CBS chose to carry the address as a special report, then planned to resume the finale immediately afterward for Eastern and Central time-zone viewers. The available reporting establishes a schedule conflict and CBS’s broadcast plan, not that Trump chose the time to target the show.
What happened to the ‘Survivor’ finale?
The Season 49 finale was scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. ET/PT on Wednesday, Dec. 17, 2025, and run for three hours. Trump’s address was set for 9 p.m. ET, so it landed during the episode. CBS announced that it would interrupt its programming for a special report, anchored by Norah O’Donnell, with chief White House correspondent Nancy Cordes reporting from the White House.

In its programming advisory, CBS said the finale “will resume where it left off immediately following the president’s address for Eastern and Central Time Zone viewers on the CBS Television Network and air in its entirety.” That was the network’s announced plan, not confirmation of how every local affiliate or on-demand service handled the episode.
Why did the speech interrupt the show?
The documented explanation is the timing overlap: Trump scheduled a live address for 9 p.m. ET, and CBS decided to air it while the finale was in progress. The sources do not establish that the address was deliberately timed to disrupt Survivor. Calling it a targeted interruption would go beyond what the contemporaneous coverage and CBS advisory show.

Trump announced the address on Truth Social on Tuesday, Dec. 16, for the following night. CBS’s advisory, published that day, laid out how the network planned to handle the conflict. CBS’s Dec. 16 programming advisory and The Daily Beast’s Dec. 17 report document the announcement and the broadcast plan.
What about other prime-time TV?
The verified details here concern CBS and Survivor. The available sources do not provide a complete network-by-network list of other programs affected or establish how other broadcasters handled the address. The headline’s reference to “other prime-time TV” should not be read as a verified account of every show or network decision that night.

According to CBS, Eastern and Central time-zone viewers would see the finale resume immediately after the address and air in its entirety. The published advisory does not establish what all affiliates or streaming services ultimately did, so it cannot confirm a uniform arrangement for every viewer.
