Minka Kelly later said she wished she had listened when Friday Night Lights executive producer Peter Berg warned her and Taylor Kitsch against dating. In her memoir, Kelly describes their relationship as an intense, repeatedly on-and-off romance that became toxic in retrospect—and says the breakups made working together difficult. That hindsight explains the headline’s “probably”; it cannot establish what would have happened if she had followed the warning.
Who was Minka Kelly’s Friday Night Lights co-star?
It was Taylor Kitsch, who played Tim Riggins opposite Kelly’s Lyla Garrity. The characters were romantic interests on the series, which aired from 2007 to 2011. Kelly’s account, as reported by Us Weekly, places her first strong attraction to Kitsch during filming of the pilot in 2006; she wrote that he “took my breath away.” Us Weekly’s report on Kelly’s memoir provides the show and relationship context.

What did Peter Berg reportedly warn them about?
Kelly says Berg warned her and Kitsch not to get romantically involved because they were co-stars. Parade reproduced Kelly’s recollection of Berg’s blunt advice: “Don’t f—–g do it. It’s not a good idea and it always ends badly.” This is Kelly’s reported recollection of what Berg said, not an independently recorded quotation from him. Parade’s account also reports Kelly’s later regret.
How did Kelly describe the relationship?
In Tell Me Everything: A Memoir, Kelly described the romance as on and off “more times than I can count” and characterized it as toxic in retrospect. She wrote, “So when my relationship with Taylor became toxic, I had no one to turn to.” Those are Kelly’s descriptions of her experience; the available reporting does not independently verify private events or establish Kitsch’s perspective. The Daily Beast’s coverage reports on the memoir passages and Kelly’s reflections about the cast.

Why did the relationship make working together difficult?
Kelly said the repeated breakups affected their shared workplace. She recalled avoiding the same hair-and-makeup trailer and transport van as Kitsch, and wrote, “Life became very difficult both on and off set whenever we broke up.”
She also said she had focused on Kitsch rather than consistently building relationships with the women in the cast. When the relationship became toxic, she felt she lacked their support. These are Kelly’s account of the workplace strain and her own sense of isolation—not proof that the cast as a whole rejected her.

Why does Kelly say she wishes she had listened?
Looking back, Kelly wrote, “Now, when I think back to that breakfast with Peter Berg, I wished I’d listened to him.” Her regret follows the difficulties she describes: a volatile romance unfolding alongside a shared job, with breakups affecting day-to-day work. It supports the conclusion that she believes the warning was worth heeding, but it does not prove that avoiding the relationship would have prevented every problem she later experienced.
