The available production account says creator Joss Whedon decided Gayheart was unsuitable for the role. It does not establish that a specific lack of chemistry was the sole reason for the change.
What happened during the original pilot
Rebecca Gayheart was first cast as Inara Serra and had begun filming “Serenity,” the original Firefly pilot. During production, Joss Whedon decided she was not right for the part, and the role went to Morena Baccarin. The production account describes the decision as Whedon’s judgment that Gayheart was unsuitable, rather than detailing a particular incident or performance problem. Slashfilm’s account of the recasting provides this chronology.
Why was Gayheart replaced?
The clearest supported explanation is that Whedon judged Gayheart unsuitable for Inara during the pilot’s production. He considered chemistry among actors as part of his broader approach to casting the ensemble, but the available account does not show that a specific chemistry problem was the decisive reason in Gayheart’s case. It would overstate the evidence to present “no chemistry with the cast” as a confirmed, exclusive explanation.
The account does not establish a personal conflict, a confrontation, or a specific failing in Gayheart’s performance. Nor does it provide a direct explanation from Gayheart, Baccarin, or Whedon that clarifies the precise basis for the decision.

How Baccarin joined the production
Baccarin auditioned for the part and joined the set shortly afterward; the account says she was there two days later. Firefly was her first television series. It also recounts that Whedon brought her from the testing room and introduced her to the set “like a proud dad,” but that wording comes through a secondary account rather than a primary interview transcript, so it should not be treated as a fully verified direct quotation.

Firefly: The Official Companion, listed by Penguin Random House Library Marketing, includes cast and crew interviews, shooting scripts, and behind-the-scenes material. Those contents may offer broader production context, though the listing alone does not establish that it gives a more precise explanation for this recasting. Penguin Random House’s listing for the official companion describes the book’s contents.
