King Charles III did not attend Pope Francis’s funeral on 26 April 2025. His son and heir, Prince William, represented him. Contemporaneous reporting says royal officials did not explicitly give a reason for the absence, so the explanations discussed below are expert interpretation, not an official Palace position.

Who represented the King
Prince William attended on behalf of Charles. The Associated Press described it as the first time William had represented the monarch at an international funeral.
The absence drew attention partly because of a recent meeting. Charles and Queen Camilla met Pope Francis privately at the Vatican on 9 April 2025, during their visit to Italy, 17 days before the funeral. That meeting explains why readers found the absence surprising. It does not explain who was sent in the King’s place.

What officials said, and what they did not
The AP’s report of 26 April 2025 states that royal officials did not explicitly cite a reason for Charles’s absence. The reporting on the funeral does not quote a Buckingham Palace statement setting out the decision to send William, so any account of the reasoning has to be labelled as interpretation.
The explanations on offer
Two expert observations appear in AP’s coverage. Both come from outside the Palace, and neither is presented as a confirmed rationale.
Rank #2
A historical split with Rome
George Gross, a royal historian at King’s College London, told AP: “This is the country that broke from Rome; there is that historical split.” He described the pattern as “that classic British fusion of historical precedent which becomes a tradition.” In his reading, the Church of England’s break from Rome in the 16th century shapes how the monarchy approaches papal events. This is an argument about long-standing context, not a documented decision.
The 2005 precedent
AP noted that Queen Elizabeth II did not attend the funeral of Pope John Paul II in 2005 and sent then-Prince Charles in her place. That is a relevant precedent: a British monarch sending the heir rather than travelling in person. It is one instance, though, and the reporting does not describe it as a binding rule that governs later funerals.
Rank #3
The King’s diary and health
Gross also said the King’s diary and health could be factors. These were raised as possibilities. The reporting does not establish that either one shaped the decision.
The Vatican’s framing of the ceremony
On 25 April 2025 the Holy See Press Office stated that “it is the funeral of a pastor, and not a sovereign, according to the liturgical choices desired by the Holy Father Francis and approved by him in June 2024.” The statement describes how the rite was designed. It does not say how a government or royal household should choose its representative, so it cannot be read as the reason Charles stayed away.

| Explanation | Who offered it | What it establishes | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Historical split from Rome and British tradition | George Gross, quoted by AP | An expert reading of the historical context | An official Palace reason |
| Queen Elizabeth II’s 2005 precedent | AP’s report on the 2005 funeral of John Paul II | That a British monarch once sent the heir in her place | A binding rule for later funerals |
| The King’s diary and health | George Gross, quoted by AP | Possible factors in the decision | That either factor applied |
| Pastor-not-sovereign framing | Holy See Press Office, 25 April 2025 | How the Vatican designed the funeral rite | Why royal attendance was decided as it was |
The reporting supports one firm conclusion: Charles was absent, William attended, and no official reason was given in the coverage of the day. Anything beyond that is an informed guess, and the table shows how thin the evidence for each guess is.
