The sketch also joked about nine self-done tattoos and spending 12 to 14 hours covering them with makeup.
Where the 214-tattoo claim came from
In a mock behind-the-scenes interview for Funny or Die, Bell pretended that her body was covered in tattoos and that production had to conceal them. A contemporaneous Just Jared report reproduced her comic line: “I have 214 professional tattoos – and 9 I’ve done myself!” Just Jared’s February 8, 2012 report also described the claim that makeup took 12 to 14 hours to cover the collection. Both figures belong to the sketch’s premise; they are not documented production facts.

What made the sketch recognizable as comedy
The report named deliberately eccentric designs: braces headgear, “I Heart Windows 95,” a picture of Willy Wonka, and a pink-haired troll. These absurd details were part of the joke, though a cropped image or clip separated from its original framing could make the tattoos look like a genuine celebrity reveal.
What is known about Bell’s real tattoos
A 2024 Yahoo Entertainment fact-check summary identifies the tattooed images as coming from the Funny or Die sketch and says they are not real tattoos. That establishes the images in the sketch as fictional; it does not independently establish Bell’s present-day tattoo status.
#1 Best Overall
A 2026 secondary account says Bell remarked in a 2016 WIRED interview that she had always wanted a tattoo. The original interview is not directly available in the account, so this should be treated as a reported, dated remark—not proof of her current appearance. DocumentaryTube’s account

The punchline depends on an invented backstory: an enormous collection of tattoos, including bizarre designs, supposedly hidden for filming. Repeating the numbers without saying they came from a comedy sketch turns a scripted gag into misinformation. The reliable conclusion is narrow: the “214 tattoos” story and the tattooed images in the sketch were fictional; the sources cited here do not settle Bell’s current tattoo status.
