King Charles has not said what type of cancer he has. Buckingham Palace has confirmed only that it is not prostate cancer. The Palace says it chose to share the diagnosis to prevent speculation and to support public understanding, and that in December 2025 cancer experts advised the King to speak about cancer in general rather than his own condition. The later health update described encouraging progress, but it did not name the cancer, say whether he is in remission, or give a prognosis.
What the Palace has confirmed
The Palace’s position rests on a short list of facts, and it helps to separate them from what has been inferred.
- The diagnosis was announced on 5 February 2024. The announcement followed a separate issue noticed during the King’s hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement. The statement did not name the cancer. See the official Buckingham Palace statement of 5 February 2024.
- The cancer is not prostate cancer. The Palace has said so directly. The prostate procedure is the setting in which the other issue was found, not a confirmation of where the cancer is. ABC News’s 6 February 2024 explainer on what Buckingham Palace has and has not confirmed sets out the same distinction.
- The type, stage and treatment plan have not been published. Nothing official since 2024 has filled those gaps.
Why the cancer type has stayed private
The Palace has given two explanations, and they are different in scope.
The 2024 rationale: limiting speculation
In its February 2024 announcement, the Palace said the King had chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope that it might help public understanding for people affected by cancer around the world. The statement was an announcement that a diagnosis existed and that treatment had begun. It was not a medical report, and the Palace did not present it as one.

When the King gave his treatment update in December 2025, the Palace added an explanation for why he would not discuss his own condition in detail. According to the Associated Press’s report of 12 December 2025, the Palace said cancer experts had advised that, in his determination to support the whole cancer community, it was preferable that he did not address his own specific condition, but spoke to people affected by all forms of the disease. This is the Palace’s stated reasoning, and it is the most specific explanation available. It is not independent confirmation of any private motive, and it does not say what the medical details are. The AP report is available on apnews.com.
What the explanation does and does not cover
The reasoning explains why the King talks about cancer in general terms. It does not explain why no official would confirm a basic clinical fact such as the cancer type, and the Palace has not made that argument in those words. Readers should treat the explanation as a description of the Palace’s communications choice, not as a statement about the King’s medical privacy in any wider sense.

What the December 2025 update said
The update was the most detailed official word on the King’s condition since 2024, and it was encouraging in tone. According to the AP report:
- The King said his treatment schedule could be reduced in the new year, and he credited early diagnosis and effective intervention.
- The Palace described his response to treatment as exceptional and said his care was moving into a precautionary phase.
- The King said, in his own words, “Early diagnosis quite simply saves lives.”
Three terms in that update are easy to misread. A reduced treatment schedule is not the same as a cure, and a precautionary phase is not the same as remission. The update does not state a prognosis, a remission status, or a timeline. Those are the points on which readers most often assume more than the statement says.

What remains unknown

- Whether the King is in remission
- The prognosis
None of these has been confirmed by official sources. Any published claim about them is speculation, not reporting from the Palace.

How to read future health updates
A few checks will help you judge any new statement about the King’s health.
- Start with the Palace’s own statement, which is the primary source. Then check whether a news report quotes it accurately.
- Look for whether the condition is named. If it is not, the update cannot confirm the type, stage or site.
- Separate treatment changes from outcomes. A change in schedule or a move to a precautionary phase describes care, not the result of that care.
- Check the date. Reporting from 2024 or 2025 may not reflect the current position, and a later statement may update or qualify an earlier one.
Public interest in a monarch’s official duties is legitimate, and the King has chosen to speak about cancer as a public issue. That does not extend to private clinical details, and the reporting above follows the Palace’s own limits on what it has said.

The ABC News report on the King’s May 2025 message about the cancer experience is a useful companion to the December 2025 update, because it shows how the King has spoken about cancer in broad terms.
The public record stops at what the Palace has confirmed. The cancer type, the detail of treatment, and the prognosis remain private, and no official source has published them.
