Jordan Peele’s own account of leaving MADtv combines bitterness over his contract and creative control with one concrete grievance: a contract overlap that, in his telling, cost him a job offer from Saturday Night Live. He has not described a firing or a formal dispute, and his interviews do not include the contract itself or MADtv’s side of events.
What Peele said about the experience
The fullest account comes from a 2024 Proximity Media conversation between Peele and Ryan Coogler, published as “In Proximity: Ryan Coogler and Jordan Peele.” His own words are the best guide to what he meant.

“Contractual bullying”
Peele said: “I came off Mad very sort of like bitter from, like, what I felt was, like, contractual bullying and this kind of stuff or whatever.” He then qualified it: “I don’t know if that—if that anger is justified, but I was angry, you know?” The phrase describes how the deal felt to him. It is not a legal finding, and he does not identify a specific clause or practice.
Creative control and the push to produce
He tied the resentment to authorship: “I need to be a producer because what I felt like was the producing aspects of the show were making decisions that made it so that whatever work I put into my part of it couldn’t sort of emerge.” He described that as “suffocating” and said, “It feels unfair when you feel—especially when you feel like you’re doing something good.” The grievance, as he framed it, is that a performer’s contribution could be cut off before it reached the screen, and that this experience later shaped his wish to produce his own work.

Comedy rhythm, pay and geography
Peele contrasted his earlier comedy work in Amsterdam with television. He recalled waiting to learn whether he would get a sketch the following week, which halted the momentum he had been used to, and said the work did not pay especially well. He also noted that MADtv was based in Los Angeles while he loved New York and did not want to live in L.A. He offered these as context for his unhappiness, not as a single reason for leaving.
The SNL offer and the four-episode overlap
In a 2015 Fresh Air interview with Terry Gross, Peele described the sequence behind his most specific complaint. In his telling, the events ran in this order:
- During his last MADtv year, the writers’ strike and the 2008 Obama election were in the news. Seth Meyers called to ask whether Peele had an Obama impression.
- Peele developed the impression, travelled to audition, and was offered a job at Saturday Night Live.
- MADtv returned after the writers’ strike with four episodes still remaining on his contract.
- Those episodes overlapped with the SNL timing, so he could not leave MADtv to take the job. In his words: “I had four more episodes in my contract that overlapped and I didn’t get to fly home and continue on that show.”
Peele called the missed opportunity a “huge disappointment.” SNL had long been a dream for him, and he wanted to return to New York after years away. He said the setback became motivation to build a show of his own with Keegan-Michael Key. The overlap explains why the contract felt restrictive to him, but it does not by itself settle the precise terms or how they would be read legally.
