In Woman of the Hour, the escape that helps bring Rodney Alcala to police is based on survivor Monique Hoyt’s account. Hoyt’s report led to Alcala’s arrest in February 1979—but he was released on bail and arrested again in July for the murder of 12-year-old Robin Samsoe. The film’s version dramatizes parts of the story, so its scenes should not be mistaken for a complete record of the case.

How Rodney Alcala was caught

According to the Los Angeles Times, Monique Hoyt escaped Alcala and reported him to police. Her report led to his arrest in February 1979. The film transforms Hoyt into Amy, a character whose escape and call for help dramatize the encounter.

That February arrest was not the end of the timeline. Alcala was released on bail, then arrested again on July 24, 1979, for the murder of 12-year-old Robin Samsoe, the Los Angeles Times reports. “Caught” therefore refers first to Hoyt’s report and the February arrest, not to a final arrest that immediately stopped his crimes.

What happened on The Dating Game?

Alcala appeared on the 1970s television program The Dating Game in 1978 and won a date with Cheryl Bradshaw. Netflix’s announcement about the film describes this real premise. The public appearance is part of the documented story; the film’s conversations and the events it imagines around the show are not all historical records.

The Los Angeles Times reports that Bradshaw did not want to go on a date with Alcala after meeting him. That differs from treating the movie’s imagined post-show encounter as established fact. Netflix Tudum also notes that the film fictionalizes contestant dialogue and changes some details, including the bachelor numbering and events after the show.

Film portrayal and reported case history

Film detail What the cited accounts support What to keep in mind
Alcala appears on The Dating Game and Bradshaw selects him. Netflix’s announcement identifies his appearance and the date he won with Bradshaw as the real-world premise. The premise is documented, but the movie’s dialogue and surrounding scenes are dramatized.
Amy escapes Alcala and alerts authorities. The Los Angeles Times identifies Monique Hoyt as the survivor whose report led to Alcala’s February 1979 arrest. Amy is a film character based on Hoyt; individual scene details should be treated as the film’s portrayal, not verified case facts.
The show and its aftermath unfold as depicted on screen. The Los Angeles Times says Bradshaw did not want to follow through on a date after meeting Alcala. Do not take an imagined post-show date or private conversation as established history.

What happened after the arrests?

The Los Angeles Times reports that Alcala was ultimately convicted of seven murders and died in prison in 2021. Larger victim totals sometimes discussed around the case are estimates, not the number of murder convictions established in that account. No reliable confirmed total for all his victims is established by the cited sources.

The distinction matters when describing the film’s real-life basis: the reported arrest chronology and convictions are specific, while claims about a much larger number of victims remain uncertain.

Is Woman of the Hour based on a true story?

Yes. Its central premise draws on Alcala’s appearance on The Dating Game, Bradshaw’s selection of him, and the danger he posed to women. But it is a dramatization, not a scene-by-scene record. Netflix Tudum quotes director and star Anna Kendrick on why the film does not offer a neat ending: “Because there isn’t a perfect resolution: That character has survived, but it’s not as simple as ‘She’s going to be fine now.’” Screenwriter Ian McDonald described the broader context this way: “The context around him was the thing that I found really interesting.”
