Jay Leno said he could have removed Jimmy Kimmel’s pointed jokes from the broadcast, but chose to leave them in because the exchange had happened and he believed it was his mistake to own. Leno described the appearance as humiliating in a 2025 interview; at the time, he called Kimmel’s remarks a “sucker punch” and said he had decided to put them on air.

What Kimmel said on Leno’s show

The exchange took place during the “Ten at Ten” segment of The Jay Leno Show on January 14, 2010. Leno asked Kimmel about his best prank. Kimmel replied with a joke about promising someone his show after five years, handing it over, and then taking it back almost immediately. The reference was to Leno’s planned handoff of The Tonight Show to Conan O’Brien and NBC’s attempt to rearrange its late-night schedule during the dispute over O’Brien’s slot.

Kimmel also joked about Leno’s money and told him to leave other hosts’ shows alone, according to CBS/AP’s account of the appearance. Kimmel appeared by satellite. Two days earlier, he had mocked Leno on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, impersonating him in a gray wig and exaggerated chin. CBS/AP’s contemporaneous report describes the remarks and their context.

Why Leno did not edit the remarks out

Leno gave a direct explanation to Oprah Winfrey in January 2010: he could have edited the segment, but decided to air it. “It’s my show. I could have edited it. But I said, no, no, put it out there. I walked into it,” he said. He also described Kimmel’s remarks as a sucker punch and said that when someone is sucker-punched, the response is to get back up rather than complain or cut the joke. CBS/AP reported Leno’s explanation at the time.

In 2025, Leno revisited the decision on In Depth With Graham Bensinger. In wording quoted by TheWrap, he said: “When Kimmel came on my show and humiliated me on my own show, I let it happen. I didn’t edit it.” He explained that he had trusted the situation and called that trust a mistake. Asked why he did not cut the remarks, he said: “Because it happened. It’s real — it happened. It’s my mistake. That’s how you learn.” TheWrap’s account of the interview also notes that Leno rejected the idea that airing the exchange made for good television, saying it started a lasting dispute.

The Daily Beast reported the same broad explanation from the interview: Leno called leaving the exchange in a mistake and said he kept it because it was real and had happened. Its account also recalls Kimmel’s earlier impersonation. The quoted 2025 wording here is attributed to these reports, rather than presented as independently verified against a full transcript.

What the decision does—and does not—mean

Leno’s explanations distinguish his choice to air the segment from his judgment of the encounter. In 2010, he framed the decision as refusing to edit away an exchange he had walked into. In 2025, he described trusting Kimmel as a mistake and said leaving the remarks in was part of accepting what had happened and learning from it.

That supports a straightforward answer: Leno said he did not edit the jokes because he felt responsible for the situation and believed the real exchange should remain in the broadcast. It does not establish that he had planned to be publicly humiliated or that accepting the remarks was his sole motive. “Humiliated” is Leno’s later characterization; the observable facts are that Kimmel made pointed jokes about Leno’s role in the Leno–O’Brien transition, and Leno chose not to remove them from the program.

Why the joke landed as more than a prank story

Kimmel’s answer was aimed at the high-profile late-night handoff and the subsequent scheduling conflict, not an unrelated practical joke. The contrast in Leno’s accounts matters: his contemporaneous “sucker punch” description conveys how he said the remarks hit him then, while his later explanation emphasizes responsibility for leaving them in the show. Those are different parts of the story, not contradictory accounts of whether he could have edited the segment.
