There is no confirmed public explanation for why Shrek appears less often in SML. The evidence does not show that Nintendo’s 2021 action removed him: the reported changes concerned Nintendo-related characters, while Shrek is associated with DreamWorks. A fan-maintained SML timeline later reported a possible puppet return, but it does not establish why that plan did not lead to new remakes.
Shrek’s role in SML
Shrek appeared in SML as one of the series’ characters borrowed from other franchises, according to the SML Movies overview. So “not in SML anymore” is best understood as a question about his reduced visibility, not proof that he was formally removed from the series. The available sources do not provide an episode-by-episode accounting of his appearances or a catalog audit showing whether older videos featuring him are still accessible.
Did Nintendo’s 2021 action affect Shrek?
Not on the evidence available. The SML Wiki’s account of the 2021 cease-and-desist period describes changes involving Nintendo-associated characters and SML’s format. It also says Shrek and Woody’s status was unknown at the time. That account does not document a Shrek-specific restriction, and Nintendo-related changes do not establish that DreamWorks took action against SML.
The legal details are reported by a fan-maintained source, rather than confirmed here by a direct statement from the creator or rights holder. It is therefore not sound to say that Shrek was banned, that DreamWorks sent a cease-and-desist, or that the Nintendo action forced him out.

Was Shrek supposed to return as a puppet?
A fan-maintained SML Remakes timeline reports that Logan Thirtyacre discussed bringing classic characters, including Shrek and Woody, back in puppet form in 2022. The page does not reproduce a direct quotation, so this should be treated as a secondary report—not as a verified announcement from Logan.
The same timeline says no new remakes followed and that Shrek remained in his original form. It does not explain why the reported puppet plans did not proceed. That leaves a possible production direction on record, but not a confirmed reason for Shrek’s reduced role.

What does “not in SML anymore” mean?
The phrase can refer to several different things: fewer appearances in new videos, a character being phased out, scenes being edited, or older uploads becoming unavailable or harder to find. These are not interchangeable. The sources available do not establish that Shrek was permanently retired, that scenes featuring him were systematically removed, or that every older video with him is still online. Without a Shrek-specific episode and availability audit, the most accurate conclusion is simply that his current status and the reason for his lower visibility are unconfirmed.
