Creator Dan Erickson said the cold exterior was meant to make Lumon’s influence feel as if it extends beyond the office and into the town around it.
Why does the show keep the town in winter?
In a January 2025 interview with TIME, Erickson explained that director and executive producer Ben Stiller wanted viewers to feel they were “always at Lumon even when you’re not at Lumon.” Erickson connected that idea to “this overall feeling of coldness that sort of envelops this town,” adding that the series takes place in the dead of winter to support that atmosphere.

The season outside Lumon therefore works as an emotional extension of the workplace: the characters may leave the office, but the world around them still feels chilly and uneasy. That contrast suits a series built around the separation of employees’ work and personal memories, while suggesting that Lumon’s reach is not confined to its corridors.
Was winter an intentional production-design choice?
Yes. Production designer Jeremy Hindle independently described the choice in a Film Independent interview: “I wanted it to always be winter outside Lumon.” His statement supports reading the persistent cold as an intentional part of the show’s visual design, not just incidental weather.

Is the winter a clue about the story’s world?
The cited comments explain the creators’ and designer’s intentions; they do not establish an in-universe cause for the weather. They do not confirm that a climate crisis, unusual local conditions, or a hidden plot mechanism keeps the town in winter. Those ideas may be fan speculation, but the available production statements support a thematic and visual explanation instead.
That reading fits the show’s blend of workplace drama, dystopian science fiction, and black comedy. The Television Academy describes Severance as exploring identity, grief, and the corporate machine; a cold town beyond the office reinforces that uneasy atmosphere without needing to function as a separate piece of lore.
