Hulk Hogan left the World Wrestling Federation in the summer of 1993, and the available evidence documents when that happened far better than why. No single cause is established. The record points to a combination of pressures: a steroid controversy and public-image problems that had surfaced in 1992, a clear pull toward film and television work, and backstage friction that a later academic study ties partly to Hogan’s own recollections. The timing is firm; the motive is an informed reconstruction.

Timeline of Hogan’s 1992–1993 exit

The company was called the WWF in 1993 and became World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 2002. The sequence below separates dated events from interpretation.

Date What happened Source
March 1992 The Los Angeles Times reports on steroid allegations and Hogan’s image problems. WWF owner Vince McMahon says Hogan is taking an indefinite hiatus after WrestleMania VIII. Los Angeles Times, March 12, 1992
February 1993 Hogan returns to WWF programming after roughly ten months away. Chard and Litherland, 2018; WWE history
April 4, 1993 At WrestleMania IX, Bret Hart loses the WWF Championship to Yokozuna, who then loses it to Hogan. WWE history
June 13, 1993 Hogan wrestles at King of the Ring, his last WWF match before a long absence. WWE history; Chard and Litherland, 2018
Summer 1993 Hogan’s departure from the WWF. He then begins work on the CBS series Thunder in Paradise. Chard and Litherland, 2018
February 2002 Hogan returns to WWE programming. WWE history

The WWE chronology and the 2018 academic study agree on the June 1993 final match. Neither source gives a specific day for the departure itself, which is why it is described only as “summer 1993.”

The factors the evidence supports

Each explanation below rests on a different kind of source, and that difference matters for how much weight it can bear.

The steroid controversy and public image

This was the most visible pressure in the years before the exit. A March 1992 Los Angeles Times report described allegations of steroid use and Hogan’s on-air denial on The Arsenio Hall Show. The same article recounts the 1991 conviction of George Zahorian and says Hogan had been subpoenaed in a matter concerning sales allegations, though his testimony was waived. These are reported allegations and legal context, not findings that Hogan was guilty of anything beyond what was adjudicated in that case.

The article also records McMahon’s position. He said Hogan was on an indefinite hiatus and denied that adverse publicity was the reason. McMahon’s quote from that report is: “It might be for six months, it might be for a year, it might be forever, we don’t know.” That statement predates the 1993 exit by more than a year, so it describes the 1992 absence, not the decision to leave. It also means the company’s stated explanation at the time did not name the controversy, which is a reason not to treat the controversy as a proven cause.

Film and television ambitions

The 2018 academic study by Chard and Litherland places Hogan’s film work in the period around his departure. It discusses Mr. Nanny (1993) and reports that he viewed film work as a way to advance his screen career. After leaving the WWF in summer 1993, he began work on Thunder in Paradise. This is strong evidence that Hollywood work was part of his plans. It does not show that he left the WWF only to act, and the study does not say he had secured a specific role before the exit.

Backstage and business tensions

The same study, drawing on Hogan’s autobiography, says disagreements with McMahon and other wrestlers worsened his difficulties on screen. Because the account relies partly on Hogan’s own recollection, it should be read as a retrospective version of events rather than a contemporaneous finding. It is the only source here that describes the working relationship in detail, which makes it useful but not conclusive.

Hogan’s later account of the relationship

In a WWE.com interview published February 25, 2014, Hogan said of his departure: “Even when I left in the early ’90s, we still loved each other to death on a personal level.” He described business and personal friendship as separate matters and said he and McMahon did not exchange calls during his WCW years. The remark weakens a simple personal-feud explanation, but it is Hogan’s own retrospective view and does not settle what happened in negotiations. The interview is available at WWE.com.

What the sources do not establish

The available sources do not give the precise expiry date of Hogan’s contract, his financial terms, or a verified account of any 1993 renewal talks. They also contain no contemporaneous statement from Hogan or the WWF that explains the exit. Any article that names the contract terms or a single decisive reason is going beyond the evidence.

How to test a claim about why Hogan left

When you read an explanation of the 1993 exit, these checks separate documented claims from inference:

  • Date of the source. A 1992 article can describe the climate around Hogan’s career but cannot describe a decision made in 1993.
  • Who is speaking. Retrospective accounts from Hogan, including his autobiography and his 2014 comments, are first-person recollections, not independent confirmation.
  • Whether a cause is named or implied. A claim that a factor “contributed” is more defensible than one that says it “caused” the exit.
  • Whether the chronology is cited. The June 13, 1993 final match and the February 2002 return are documented by WWE’s own history; statements about negotiations generally are not.

Read this way, the most defensible conclusion is that Hogan’s departure came amid an image crisis, a turn toward film and television, and reported backstage strain, and that no source reviewed here isolates one of these as the decisive reason.
