The clearest in-world reason for the Poison type is Gastly’s gas: its official Pokédex entry says it weakens prey by poisoning it through the skin. That makes the typing fit the family’s lore, though it does not establish why the original designers chose it.
What type is Gengar?
Gengar’s official Pokédex classification is Ghost/Poison. The official India Pokédex lists it with both types, and the official Gastly Pokédex entry places it in the Gastly-to-Haunter-to-Gengar evolutionary line. Gengar’s official Pokédex entry and Gastly’s official Pokédex entry establish the classification and lineage.
This is not a case where Gengar is simply Ghost and Poison is an unofficial interpretation: both types are part of its official classification.
Why does Poison fit Gengar’s family?
The strongest in-world explanation starts with Gastly, the first Pokémon in the line. Its official Pokédex description says: “It wraps its opponent in its gas-like body, slowly weakening its prey by poisoning it through the skin.” Gas and poisoning together make Poison a thematically coherent part of the family’s identity, which carries through Haunter to Gengar.

This is an interpretation of the Pokémon lore, not a creator-confirmed explanation of the original typing decision. The Pokédex describes what Gastly can do; it does not say that this ability was the reason the developers assigned Poison to the line.
Is Gengar Ghost/Poison in other official material?
Yes. The official Pokémon anime episode listing for “A Ghost of a Chance” identifies Gastly, Haunter, and Gengar as Ghost/Poison. An official Pokémon TCG reference also includes a Gengar card with Poison energy and a Poison Jab attack that poisons the defending Pokémon. These sources corroborate the classification and the franchise’s association of Gengar with poison, but they do not explain the historical design choice.

Did the designers explain the original choice?
The official references cited here confirm Gengar’s typing and provide a lore-based reason Poison suits the evolution line. They do not document the original development rationale. Without a development interview, design note, or comparable primary-source explanation, it would be speculation to claim the type was chosen for a particular game-balance reason or other behind-the-scenes purpose.
