Bowen Yang left Saturday Night Live after the December 20, 2025 episode. In a January 2026 interview, he said he had stayed “exactly as long as I wanted to.” His remarks describe a personal decision about timing, alongside the demands of the show; public reporting does not establish a single incident, backstage dispute, or outside project as the reason.
When did Bowen Yang leave SNL?
Yang’s final regular-cast appearance was the December 20, 2025 episode, hosted by Ariana Grande with Cher as musical guest. In the closing sketch, Yang played a Delta lounge employee finishing his last shift. Grande and Cher joined the sendoff, and Yang also appeared in a final Weekend Update segment with former cast member Aidy Bryant. The Associated Press reported on the episode, as did ABC News.
Headlines differ between “after seven seasons” and “after eight seasons” because accounts count his tenure differently. Yang joined SNL as a writer in 2018, became a featured player the following season, and joined the main cast in season 47. He left during season 51, so his time on the writing staff preceded and extended beyond the seasons he spent as a cast member. CBS News describes the exit as after eight seasons.
What reason did Yang give for leaving?
In a January 7, 2026 conversation with Matt Rogers on Las Culturistas, Yang said: “I have this very beautiful thing where I get to say that I stayed on exactly as long as I wanted to.” He also said he had been unsure over the summer whether to return, but was glad he did. TheWrap reported his comments.

He emphasized the show’s unusually compressed pace: an idea developed on Tuesday can be on television by Saturday. He called the closing sketch emotionally true to his feelings about the people there. Those comments offer context about the work and his attachment to the team, but he did not identify workload as the sole cause of leaving.
Why did he return for season 51?
Before the season began, Yang told People that he had considered whether he had more to do at SNL and worried viewers might be getting tired of him. He said creator Lorne Michaels encouraged him to continue, telling him, “There’s more for you to do. I need you.” Yang also said Michaels had changed his life and spoke of his affection for working with the show’s people. AP and ABC News reported the account.

What did Yang say in his farewell?
In a farewell message reported on December 20, Yang wrote: “i loved working at SNL, and most of all i loved the people. i was there at a time when many things in the world started to seem futile, but working at 30 rock taught me the value in showing up anyway when people make it worthwhile.” He thanked the cast, writers, crew, and Michaels. AP quoted the message.
Variety Australia also reported Yang’s reflection that “comedy is mostly logistics and that it will usually fail until it doesn’t.” In the final sketch, he said, “I just feel so lucky that I ever got to work here,” and that he had loved every person who worked there, according to ABC News.

Yang’s public account frames the departure as a timing decision. The reporting cited here does not establish that he was fired, identify a backstage conflict, or connect his exit to a particular project. His work outside SNL, including Las Culturistas and film roles, is career context—not evidence of what caused him to leave.
