Archewell Foundation was declared delinquent because California’s charity registry treated one or more of its required annual renewal filings as missing or incomplete. The available reporting does not identify the specific form, fee, delivery problem or processing issue behind the notice. On May 14, 2024, the California Attorney General’s press office said the foundation was current and in good standing after contact with the Registry.

What “delinquent” meant in Archewell’s case

In California, “delinquent” is a Registry filing status: a charity has not submitted complete filings for each fiscal year. It describes a compliance issue with required reporting, not by itself a finding of fraud or misuse of donations. The California Attorney General explains the designation in its Delinquency guidance.

For Archewell, the precise deficiency was not made public in the sources available. The Los Angeles Times reported that Registry records showed its last renewal before the notice was in May 2023, but neither that report nor the state’s statement specifies which filing or administrative issue triggered the delinquency. The date is therefore context for the notice, not proof of a particular missing document.

What California charities must file

California’s annual renewal is separate from a charity’s federal tax filing. The state generally requires a charity to submit Form RRF-1, the applicable IRS Form 990, 990-EZ or 990-PF, and the applicable renewal fee. Organizations eligible to file IRS Form 990-N generally submit California Form CT-TR-1 instead. The state’s Annual Registration Renewal guidance describes the requirements.

Submitting a Form 990 to the IRS does not, on its own, complete the separate California Registry renewal. If the Registry does not receive complete required filings, it can mark the charity delinquent.

Was the Archewell notice resolved?

Yes, according to the California Attorney General’s press office. The Los Angeles Times reported that on May 14, 2024, the office said: “After being in touch with our Registry of Charities and Fundraisers, the organization is current and in good standing.” The Times also reported a separate statement from an Archewell spokesperson, who said the foundation had “diligently investigated the situation” and was “fully compliant and in good standing.” These are distinct assurances: one from the Attorney General’s press office and one from the foundation.

That confirms the reported resolution in May 2024; it does not establish Archewell’s present status. The Registry’s live records should be checked for a current determination. The Los Angeles Times account is available at Harry, Meghan’s Archewell Foundation no longer ‘delinquent’.

What delinquency can mean for a charity

While an organization is delinquent, California says it is not in good standing and may not operate or solicit donations in the state. If the filing problem is not corrected, its status may advance to suspended or revoked, and late fees or penalties may apply. Those are general consequences under state rules; they are not evidence that Archewell faced each consequence.

Why current Registry labels are not the 2024 labels

California revised its Registry status terminology in August 2026. Under the current system, “Registered” describes registration status, while a separate reporting status indicates whether annual reporting is current, due, past due or in review. The Registry’s Registry Statuses page explains these terms. They should not be applied retroactively to the May 2024 notice.

The state also extended deadlines for renewals due from January 7, 2025 through August 31, 2026 to August 31, 2026, as described in its renewal guidance. That later extension does not explain a delinquency notice issued in 2024.

What the public record does—and does not—show

The documented explanation is administrative: California’s Registry uses delinquent status when required annual filings are incomplete or missing. Reporting established that Archewell’s last renewal before the notice was listed in May 2023 and that the Attorney General’s office said the foundation was current and in good standing on May 14, 2024. The exact filing or processing issue behind the notice remains unspecified; the status alone does not establish wrongdoing.
