The clearest mainline example is Fantastic Four #605, written by Jonathan Hickman and drawn by Ron Garney, which shows Ben Grimm with a grown, rocky beard in a future where he is still alive long after the rest of the team has died. The image is about endurance. It is not a confirmed clue to any movie plot.
What the mainline comic shows
In Fantastic Four #605, Reed Richards and his father Nathaniel travel forward in time and find Ben still alive long after the other members of the team have died. The beard is part of that picture of a Ben who outlives his friends. Coverage of the issue reads it as a statement about his survival and longevity, and that is the most useful way to understand it.
Why the future setting matters
Because the beard appears in a distant-future setting, it belongs to a specific story rather than to the Thing’s everyday look. Readers who remember the Thing as a clean-shaven, orange-hided brawler will find the rocky beard reads as an aged, weathered version of the character, shown at the end of a long life.
What the comic does not explain
The reviewed coverage does not establish how his rocky beard physically grows. One explainer suggests that age-related changes to Ben’s rocky hide could allow hair to grow through and harden, and it also raises the broader possibility that his body has adjusted to his powers over time. These are the writer’s theories, not verified canon. ComicBook.com’s explainer on how the Thing could grow a beard treats the biology as unconfirmed.

Earlier beards are a different thing
Several earlier beard-like images are sometimes lumped in with the future beard, but they serve different purposes. Keep them separate when you read or discuss the character’s history.

| Fantastic Four #5 | Blackbeard story; the team uses a disguise | A fake pirate beard worn as part of the disguise | ComicBook.com |
| Marvel Fanfare #15 | Prank played by Johnny Storm | Orange straws glued to Ben’s face to imitate stubble | ComicBook.com |
| Fantastic Four #605 | Far-future story in which Ben survives his teammates | A grown, rocky beard; the mainline depiction | ComicBook.com |

| Hulked-Out Heroes | Parody or alternate-reality story | Not stated in the coverage reviewed | ComicBook.com |
Only the #605 beard is the rocky, future version that people usually mean when they ask why the Thing has a beard. The disguise and prank beards are played for humor or cover, and the parody entries are side notes rather than part of the character’s continuity.

Hide, chips, and the mechanics question
Secondary descriptions of the comics characterize the Thing’s orange rocky exterior as a hide over human flesh. Some coverage points to other comics in which that exterior can be chipped. These are descriptions of comic continuity written by entertainment outlets, not in-universe explanations, and they do not confirm how a beard would pass through the rock. Treat the hide-and-chips idea as background, not as proof of a mechanism.
What the 2025 film trailers did and did not establish
The question gained attention in June 2025, when trailers for The Fantastic Four: First Steps showed a Thing with a beard. Coverage tied the look back to the comics, as in ComicBook.com’s trailer explainer and SlashFilm’s report on the trailer. Some articles linked the beard to a possible time-travel storyline. That connection was speculation built on promotional material. A beard alone does not signal a time-travel plot, and nothing in the reviewed coverage confirms one.

For panel-level detail, read Fantastic Four #605 itself. The secondary coverage described here does not reproduce the art or the dialogue around the beard, so it cannot settle small points of staging. The film-specific question of how the trailer’s Thing shaves is covered separately by GamesRadar+. That answer concerns the film version, not the comic.
