Francesca Bridgerton looks different in season 3 because a different actress plays her. Hannah Dodd replaced Ruby Stokes, who played Francesca in seasons 1 and 2 and then left the role to lead Netflix’s Lockwood & Co. Reporting we could date places the casting change in May 2024, the same year season 3 was released. Nothing we found documents a deliberate redesign of the character’s hair, makeup or costume, so the visible change follows from the new performer.
Who played Francesca in each season
| Season | Francesca played by | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Seasons 1 and 2 | Ruby Stokes | Left the role to star in Lockwood & Co. (Netflix) |
| Season 3 (released 2024) | Hannah Dodd | Took over the role in the recast |
What was reported about the recast
The change was covered by entertainment outlets in May 2024. Deadline’s exclusive describes Dodd as taking over from Stokes, who was leaving to lead Lockwood & Co. The Deadline link carries a 2022 date in its web address, but the casting reports we could date are from May 2024, which matches the season’s release. Treat the 2022 date in that URL as a mismatch rather than the date of the announcement.
For background on Stokes’s career and roles, see the Ruby Stokes Wikipedia entry.
Why Ruby Stokes left
Most entertainment coverage attributes Stokes’s exit to scheduling conflicts with her lead role in Lockwood & Co. Outlets such as Soap Central and Yahoo Entertainment repeat that explanation, and Screen Rant covers the recast in the same terms.

This is secondary press reporting. We did not find a formal Netflix or Shondaland statement giving the reason, and the casting announcement’s exact wording was not retrieved.
Does Francesca look different on purpose?
No source we reviewed says the character’s look was deliberately changed. The most reasonable reading is that a new actress brings a new face, hair and styling, and the production did not publish a separate design rationale. That is an absence of evidence, not proof that nothing changed.

Two claims circulating online should be treated with caution:
- Hair and makeup credit. A fan-posted TikTok credits Erika Okvist with Francesca’s season 3 first look. No official source confirmed it, so it should not be presented as fact.
- Premiere styling. Dodd’s premiere credits, including makeup by Shayna Gold (Chanel), hair by Takuya Yamaguchi (Oribe) and styling by Felicity Kay, describe red-carpet looks worn by the actress. They are not the character’s on-screen design and should not be used to explain Francesca’s appearance.
Unverified claims about the exit and role size
Some secondary summaries attribute to the showrunner a comment that Stokes’s exit was beyond the production’s control, and say that season 2 had planned a bigger role for Francesca that was later cut. The attribution differs between summaries, and we could not retrieve the original interview text, so these remarks cannot be quoted as verified. One report also says Francesca’s season 3 role is much larger than in the earlier seasons; that rests on a single source and should be read with low confidence.
