Gemma Arterton has said she was born with six fingers on each hand, a condition known as polydactyly. The extra digits were removed during her childhood, and she has described them as soft tissue without bone. That history explains the curiosity about her hands—but the available reporting does not establish that fans are currently reacting to a new event or post.
What Gemma Arterton has said about her hands
In a 2010 interview with The National, Arterton said she was born with six fingers on each hand. She described the extra digit as having no bone: “There wasn’t a bone there, it was just flesh and fingernail.” She also said her father and grandfather had the condition; that is her account of her family history, not a finding independently confirmed by medical records.
A 2008 report reproduced by Medical Xpress says the extra fingers were removed during her childhood. It quotes Arterton, speaking to Esquire, describing the difference as a source of pride: “It’s my little oddity that I’m really proud of. It makes me different.”
What polydactyly means
Polydactyly is the presence of extra digits on a hand or foot. The 2008 report describes different forms, ranging from simpler extra digits to more complex cases. Arterton’s brief description of soft tissue without bone does not provide enough clinical detail to classify her case more specifically.

The same 2008 report quotes Loyola University Medical Center hand surgeon Terry Light as saying polydactyly occurs in at least 1 in 1,000 newborns and that about 40 to 50 percent of cases have a genetic cause. Those are estimates attributed to Light in a report published in 2008, not current independently verified figures. The report offers general context, not medical guidance or a basis for drawing conclusions about Arterton’s care.
Is there a current controversy about her hands?
The available coverage explains why Arterton’s hands may attract attention: she has publicly discussed being born with extra fingers and having them removed as a child. It does not document a current wave of fan reaction or identify a new appearance, image or discussion that prompted one. A 2016 Guardian profile mentions her talking with her hands in passing, but does not report a controversy about them.

So “freaked out” should be understood as headline framing, not as a verified description of a present-day fan response. The documented story is her own matter-of-fact account of a childhood difference she has said she is proud of.
