The films show Thanos paying that price with Gamora in Avengers: Infinity War, then Natasha Romanoff giving her life so Clint Barton can take the Stone in Avengers: Endgame. They establish the rule and its consequences, but do not explain the Stone’s deeper cosmic mechanics. The best-supported explanation for why the rule matters is dramatic: it makes the Stone’s acquisition costly and gives Natasha’s final choice meaning within her story.
What is the Soul Stone’s sacrifice rule?
On Vormir, Red Skull tells Thanos that obtaining the Soul Stone requires the sacrifice of someone he loves. This is a rule about acquiring the Stone, not a general explanation of everything the Stone can do. TIME’s account of the MCU’s Infinity Stones describes the rule and the first time the films demonstrate it: TIME’s guide to the MCU’s six Infinity Stones.

The rule is stated by the figure guarding the Stone and then borne out by two separate Vormir scenes. The films do not provide a definitive in-universe reason that the Stone demands this price.
How do Thanos and Natasha pay the price?
| Vormir scene | Person lost | What the scene establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Avengers: Infinity War | Thanos sacrifices Gamora, his daughter whom he loves. | The cost of obtaining the Soul Stone is introduced, and Thanos obtains it. |
| Avengers: Endgame | Natasha Romanoff dies so Clint Barton can obtain the Stone. | The same rule applies again; the writers describe Natasha and Clint’s choice as governed by the Stone’s rule. |
The two scenes share the same condition, but their character contexts differ. Thanos’s sacrifice shows what he is willing to do to reach his goal. Natasha’s death is framed by the filmmakers as the culmination of her bond with the Avengers and her commitment to protecting them. Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus discuss the Vormir sequence and the rule in a Fandango interview about the film’s major moments.

Why did Natasha have to die for the Soul Stone?
There are two distinct answers, and they should not be confused. In the story, Natasha’s death satisfies the stated price for obtaining the Stone. In terms of storytelling, the rule forces a painful choice and lets Natasha’s final act express what her found family means to her.
McFeely said the writers had long seen the most fitting conclusion to Natasha’s arc as dying or sacrificing greatly for her new family. Joe Russo described her transformation from prioritizing survival toward preserving community and family. His comments are a creative explanation of the scene’s purpose, not an in-universe claim about who created the rule or why the Stone’s keeper enforces it. Russo discusses Natasha’s arc in an ABC News interview about making Avengers: Endgame.

Does the MCU explain the deeper reason for the sacrifice?
Not definitively in the cited films and creator comments. The story establishes the requirement and shows it working twice, but it does not settle a complete metaphysical explanation for why the Stone demands a loved one’s life. TIME notes that the Soul Stone’s powers in the film universe are unclear. In the Fandango interview, McFeely and Markus also leave open what happens when the Stone is returned, calling that a question for another time and another writer. Those comments mark what their discussion explains; they do not rule out a later MCU story adding more detail.
It is also important not to treat comic-book lore as an automatic answer. The comics and the MCU are distinct versions of the material, and rules from one do not by themselves explain the other. Ideas such as the Stone feeding on souls, Death demanding a life, or the sacrifice proving someone’s worthiness may be fan interpretations, but these sources do not establish them as MCU canon.
