People collect Sonny Angels for a mix of reasons: the figures look cute and comforting, blind boxes make each opening a small surprise, and collecting can become a personal project or a way to connect with other fans. Nostalgia and the appeal of having a physical object to display can matter too. These motives overlap, and the available evidence does not establish one explanation for every collector.
What makes Sonny Angels appealing to collect?
Sonny Angel’s regular mini figures come in blind boxes, so buyers do not know which figure is inside until they open it. The brand says secret figures are randomly included in series, and some extra-special versions have been made in very small quantities. That format naturally creates anticipation, surprise and the possibility of looking for a particular figure.
The brand describes Sonny Angel as “an angel boy that will give you healing and make you smile.” That is the company’s own description, not evidence that the figures provide a clinical or measurable health benefit. The official US store describes the figures as randomly packaged and says more than 500 varieties have been created since the character’s debut; that is the store’s current description, not a fixed count of what is available today.
Why might the figures feel comforting?
Cuteness can be part of the attraction, especially when a small figure is easy to display, carry or photograph. Good Housekeeping reported that collectors and observers connected Sonny Angels’ comforting image with the post-pandemic search for positive things to collect. That is a reported interpretation, not a measured psychological effect or a finding about all collectors.

A figure can also acquire personal meaning simply because someone enjoys seeing it on a desk, shelf or phone. Sonny Angel’s HIPPERS are designed to attach to surfaces such as monitors, smartphones and photo frames, giving some figures a visible place in daily life. The meaning comes from the collector’s experience; the product’s presence alone does not demonstrate a therapeutic benefit.
How do nostalgia and play enter the picture?
For some collectors, the figures recall toys or characters from childhood. In an interview with Mixed Feelings, collector Adi Miller said Sonny Angels reminded her of her mother’s Kewpie dolls and of toys she enjoyed growing up. She described collecting as a way for her generation to reconnect with joy and youthfulness. That is Miller’s account of her own motivation, not a general explanation for young adults.
Miller put her view this way: “I think our generation specifically [is focused] on healing our inner child and reconnecting with things that bring us joy and youth to our lives without the monetary strain and stress of having an actual child.” Her comment illustrates how one person understands the appeal; it is not a research finding about the effects of collecting.
Why does opening a blind box feel exciting?
With a blind box, the purchase does not reveal which regular figure is inside. That uncertainty can make opening the box part of the entertainment, rather than just a way to obtain a known item. Randomly included secret figures add another possible outcome, although they also mean a buyer cannot count on getting a particular one.

A 2025 qualitative study in Current Psychology interviewed people who bought POP MART blind boxes. Some participants described excitement and risk-taking as part of the appeal. One anonymous participant, discussing POP MART rather than Sonny Angel, said: “It’s like just the excitement, maybe a bit psycho, maybe, the risk taking is the best part for me, I think.” The comment helps explain a possible blind-box mechanism, but it is not evidence that Sonny Angel collectors share that motive.
What is the appeal of completing a collection or chasing a rare figure?
Collecting can turn individual purchases into a longer-running goal: finding figures a person likes, building a set, or looking for a secret variant. Sonny Angel’s official site says fans enjoy collecting the figures and describes secret figures as especially collectible. Good Housekeeping has also reported collectors seeking particular figures and attending swaps.
Scarcity can make a search feel more absorbing, but rarity does not establish investment value or guarantee that a figure will rise in price. The evidence here supports a collecting and chase appeal, not a claim that these figures are reliable financial assets.
How does collecting become social?
Fans can share photos and unboxing videos, compare collections, or trade figures. In Miller’s account to Mixed Feelings, posting her collection helped her meet a close friend through TikTok; she also described Facebook groups and Instagram as places to trade. That is one collector’s experience, rather than a measure of how often collecting leads to friendships.

The 2025 Current Psychology study found that participants discussing POP MART blind boxes described shared interests, group interaction and relationships as relevant motivations. Its authors discuss relatedness in that study context. Sonny Angel fans may find similar social opportunities, but the study did not investigate this brand specifically.
A physical figure also gives people something they can keep, display, photograph and exchange, while online platforms help collectors find one another. An October 2024 ABC Melbourne segment framed Sonny Angel collecting within the continuing appeal of physical objects in a digital world. That context does not establish loneliness as a cause of collecting.
Do all collectors enjoy the same part of it?
No. The appeal can differ by person and even by collecting occasion. Some people may care most about the figure’s look or the memories it brings up; others may enjoy the uncertainty of opening a box, building a set, or sharing and trading with other fans. A collector who prefers a known figure may find blind-box randomness frustrating rather than fun.
- Aesthetic or comfort appeal: enjoying a small character as an object to see or display.
- Surprise-driven appeal: enjoying the reveal and uncertainty of a blind-box opening.
- Collection goals: building a series or looking for a particular figure, including a secret variant.
- Social appeal: sharing collections, discussing figures or trading with other fans.
What does the evidence establish—and what does it not?
There is no representative Sonny Angel-specific statistic in the sources cited here that establishes collectors’ demographics, how common each motive is, or whether collecting improves wellbeing. The strongest academic source is a qualitative study of POP MART blind-box consumers, not Sonny Angel collectors, so it can suggest possible mechanisms without proving what drives this particular fandom.

What should buyers know about secret figures and authenticity?
Secret figures are randomly included, and Sonny Angel’s official site says release information can vary by country. Buyers looking for a specific figure should check current official information rather than assume a particular series or product is available in every market.
The brand warns that counterfeit or imitation products circulate, says it filed a criminal complaint in Yiwu in October 2025 against companies manufacturing and selling counterfeits, and advises customers to buy through authorized retailers. It also says it does not provide authentication services. Check the brand’s official retailer directory before buying from a seller whose status is unclear.
