The short answer is that nobody outside the studio has confirmed why Paimon’s English voice changed. What can be documented is narrower: in Genshin Impact’s Version 5.7 change history, the English voice credit for Paimon moved from Corina Boettger to the credit “Anonymous.” That is a credit change, not an official explanation, and it does not name the performer who took over the role.
This article separates the documented facts from the labor-related context that often gets presented as the reason, and explains how to tell whether a player is hearing a recast or simply a different language setting.
What the change-history record shows
The clearest primary-style evidence is the game’s own version history. Version 5.7’s change record lists the English voice credit for Paimon as changing from Corina Boettger to “Anonymous.” The entry establishes that the credit changed. It does not identify who now performs the role, and it does not explain why the credit was changed.
Icy Veins also reported the Version 5.7 recast. Its coverage offers speculation about the cause, and that speculation should not be read as reporting. The most that can be taken from it is independent confirmation that the change was noticed and written up around the same version.

| Question | What is established | What is not established |
|---|---|---|
| Did the English credit change? | Yes. Version 5.7 change history lists Corina Boettger replaced by “Anonymous.” | Not applicable |
| Who is the new performer? | Not stated in the change record, which uses “Anonymous.” | No confirmed name from HoYoverse in the sources reviewed. |
| Why did it change? | No official reason found in the sources reviewed. | Causes such as the 2023 payment dispute are context, not confirmed explanations. |
Is the voice you hear actually different?
Before assuming a recast, check the language setting. HoYoverse states that Genshin Impact supports four voice-over languages: English, Chinese, Japanese, and Korean. Players can choose voice-over language and text language independently, so a player who has switched voice-over to another language may hear a different voice without any change to the English cast.
To separate the two cases:
- If you hear a different language (for example Japanese or Chinese when you expect English), the voice-over setting was likely changed. Look in the game’s audio or language options and confirm that voice-over is set to English.
- If the language is English but the voice sounds different, this is consistent with the Version 5.7 English cast change. Compare the lines you hear with the version in which you first noticed the difference.
- If you cannot tell, check the patch notes or change history for the version you were playing when the voice changed.
The labor context around the original actor
Public reporting about the original English actor exists, and it is the reason the question is so often answered with a single cause. It should be read as context, with its limits stated.

July 2023: a payment dispute
In July 2023, GameSpot reported a statement from Corina Boettger saying they had gone months without payment. Boettger said: “Just to be clear, we don’t know if this is the fault of the studio, or the game company. But regardless, if the game was union this wouldn’t happen.” HoYoverse told GameSpot that it had paid its recording studio on time, had urged the studio to pay the voice actors, and was seeking alternative solutions. The reported dispute concerned pay to the actors, and the reporting does not show that it led to the Version 5.7 credit change.
July 2024: a stated condition for returning
A July 2024 interview page reports that Boettger would not return to Genshin Impact unless the game became union-supported. This is the actor’s stated position as reported in that interview. It is not confirmation of what HoYoverse decided about casting.

What cannot be claimed
Three statements are not supported by the sources reviewed, and each is often repeated as fact:
- That HoYoverse confirmed the 2023 payment dispute caused the later credit change. The available reporting does not establish that link.
- That the replacement performer’s identity is officially confirmed. The change record uses “Anonymous,” and no primary statement naming the performer was found.
- That any claim about the actor’s personal conduct is established. Allegations and fan speculation on that point were not verified.
The reason for the change is therefore unresolved in public sources. The documented facts are the credit change in Version 5.7 and a set of labor disputes that were reported separately from it.
