The exit was a creative decision made by showrunner Tim Minear, who killed off Krause’s character, Bobby Nash, at the end of Season 8. Minear has said Krause never asked to go, and Krause has said since then that Minear told him well in advance. The reasons behind the decision, and what the sources do and do not establish about it, are set out below.
How Bobby Nash dies in Season 8
Bobby’s death comes in Season 8, Episode 15, “Lab Rats,” which aired on April 17, 2025. The episode builds around a virus outbreak in the lab, and the sequence that ends Bobby’s life runs in three beats:
- The sole antiviral dose. Only one dose of the antiviral is available, and Bobby uses it to save Chimney.
- The discovery of his own exposure. Bobby then realizes he has also been exposed to the virus.
- Isolation in the lab. Rather than risk infecting the people around him, he locks himself in the lab and stays there.
ABC News reported on the episode the following morning. Krause’s immediate reaction, given in that coverage, was that Bobby’s choice to save Chimney fit the character, and that he would miss the cast and crew, whom he described as his workplace for eight years across eight seasons. That eight-year figure is Krause’s own description of his time on the show, not a measured statistic.
Why Minear chose to kill Bobby
Minear explained the decision in interviews published on April 17, 2025, the same day the episode aired. He gave several connected reasons, and they are worth separating because they do different jobs in the story.
#1 Best Overall
The show needed credible stakes
Minear’s most general argument concerns the premise of the series. A drama built around dangerous emergencies loses tension if viewers assume the lead ensemble will always come through. Once a major character can die, later emergencies carry real suspense. He also described the risk of the show going slack through inertia if its characters always survived, which is the reason he gave for not keeping the status quo heading into Season 9.
Bobby’s loss touched the whole ensemble
Minear said he picked the character whose absence would change every other character’s storyline, and he called Bobby the most impactful choice and “the scariest character to kill.” That is a claim about narrative reach, not a ratings or audience figure. It explains why Bobby, rather than a more peripheral cast member, was the one chosen.

The death completes Bobby’s arc
Minear framed Bobby’s story as a progression. Bobby arrived in Los Angeles with a death wish and a desire for redemption, and over eight seasons he found love and a place in the world. In that reading, the final sacrifice is an act of atonement and the reverse of the death wish he began with. The ending therefore closes the arc rather than undercutting it.
The timing left room for grief
Minear wanted the death to happen before the season ended. That placement gave the remaining episodes room to show the rest of the ensemble dealing with the loss, instead of ending the season on the death itself.

Minear answered this directly in the April 2025 TV Insider interview. Asked whether Krause had wanted out, he said: “This was entirely a creative decision. It’s not like Peter came to me and was like, ‘I’m ready to go.’ That’s not at all what happened.” In a separate remark from the same interview period, he said: “Nobody wanted Peter to leave, most of all me, but I just felt like we’re going into Season 9 and it would’ve been comfortable to keep everything status quo and happy happy.”
Krause’s account came later. In a September 17, 2026 interview with TheWrap, he said Minear had told him in advance and that he kept the news from the rest of the cast until filming. He described leaving as hard, said “I loved Bobby Nash and the audience did too,” and said he was happy to move on to his next project, Line of Fire. Krause’s account and Minear’s are consistent: the decision came from the production side, and the actor was informed ahead of the episode.

Is Bobby really gone?
Minear said Bobby’s death is definitive within the story. He also said the character could return in later episodes through flashbacks, dreams, or hallucinations. Those are different things from a return to life. A flashback or a hallucinatory appearance shows Bobby in a memory or a mind, not alive in the present timeline, so a sighting in a later episode should not be read as proof that he survived.

The creative rationale rests mainly on Minear’s interviews with TV Insider and TheWrap, and the post-episode reaction comes from ABC News coverage. Those sources agree that the exit was creative and that the death was chosen for story reasons. They do not say anything about the actor’s future plans beyond what Krause himself has stated, and they do not address how the decision was received by viewers, which is outside what the reporting covers.
