Some wrestling fans criticize Hulk Hogan because racist remarks he made in a recording, and doubts about the sincerity of his apology, conflict with the heroic image he built in wrestling. Others object to his prominence or felt he did not fit WCW’s audience and style in the 1990s. But dislike is not universal: many fans still remember him as a childhood hero and a major force in wrestling’s growth. There is no published figure establishing what share of fans dislike him.
Why Hogan’s public image became part of the controversy
Hogan’s 1980s character was more than a successful wrestler’s persona. Scholarly analysis describes it through themes of Christianity, masculinity and xenophobia (scholarly analysis of Hogan’s 1980s persona). His patriotic, family-entertainment image helps explain why later conduct struck some fans as especially discordant. That is an interpretation of the contrast, not evidence that every fan experienced it the same way.
What happened in the racist-remarks controversy?
A recording made in 2007 became public in 2015. It captured Hogan using racial slurs while discussing his daughter’s relationship with a Black man. In an ABC News interview, Hogan said, “I’m not a racist but I never should have said what I said. It was wrong. I’m embarrassed by it,” and described his upbringing as context for his language (ABC News interview).
Hogan’s account of his intent and upbringing is his explanation; it does not erase the recorded words. Some fans and commentators later questioned whether his apology showed genuine remorse. Kazeem Famuyide, co-host of The Ringer Wrestling Show, told the Associated Press, “You never really got the feeling that Hulk Hogan truly felt remorse” (Associated Press coverage of fan reactions and Hogan’s legacy). That is Famuyide’s opinion, not a finding about all fans.

WWE removed Hogan from its Hall of Fame in 2015 and reinstated him in 2018, according to ABC News Australia’s retrospective (ABC News Australia on the controversy and WWE’s response). Those decisions document the organization’s response; they do not establish that fans or wrestlers agreed on either one.
Why some viewers were less receptive to Hogan in WCW
Hogan’s reception also varied by era and promotion. He was a defining WWE star in the 1980s. WWE’s history says he debuted in WCW in 1994 by defeating Ric Flair for the WCW World Championship (WWE’s WCW history).

In a retrospective interview, WCW producer Kevin Sullivan recalled that Atlanta crowds did not welcome Hogan with the same enthusiasm as 1980s WWE audiences. Sullivan said the audience and wrestling style had changed (WWE interview with Kevin Sullivan). This is a useful explanation of a shift in reception, not a poll or a measured consensus. A familiar heroic character and top-card position could appeal to one audience and frustrate another.
How the nWo turn changed the character
In June 1996, Hogan joined Scott Hall and Kevin Nash to form the New World Order, turning the familiar hero into a villainous figure. WWE’s history says fans threw trash into the ring during the reveal (WWE’s account of the nWo turn). That reaction shows how charged the moment was in the arena; it does not mean every fan rejected Hogan or that the crowd’s response explains later criticism.

Why reactions remain divided
For some fans, Hogan’s cultural influence and childhood-hero status remain central. For others, the racial slurs and their doubts about his response are difficult to reconcile with his public persona. Still others judge the wrestler by period: the 1980s WWE hero, the 1990s WCW star or the later public figure.
The divide was visible again in 2025. The Associated Press interviewed fans and commentators who recalled Hogan as a superhero while also reporting criticism and mistrust (Associated Press coverage). POST Wrestling reported that Hogan was booed during his January 2025 appearance at WWE Raw’s Netflix debut (POST Wrestling’s retrospective). One crowd reaction is not a verdict from wrestling fans as a whole.

The most accurate answer, then, is not that wrestling fans universally hate Hogan. Some dislike him because his recorded words and the perceived limits of his remorse undermine the image they associate with him; others object to his fit or prominence in particular wrestling eras. Many continue to admire his role in wrestling history.
