James Norton left Grantchester because Sidney Chambers’s story felt complete to him, and he wanted to make room for another actor to lead while pursuing new challenges. He described it as a combination of story and career reasons—not as a dismissal or a reported dispute with the production.
Why James Norton chose to leave
In a What to Watch interview published on 6 July 2022, Norton said there was a “combination of things” behind his decision. One was the point Sidney’s story had reached: once Sidney’s relationship with Amanda was tied up, Norton felt the character’s arc had come to a natural conclusion.

That relationship was part of his reasoning, not the whole explanation. Norton also wanted to give someone else the chance to take the lead. “And I just felt like it was time to give someone else a turn — if you want to carry on learning you’ve got to take the plunge,” he said.
He wanted new challenges beyond the series
Norton said he was looking to challenge himself through new work, including film. In the same 2022 interview, he mentioned that Sally Wainwright was writing a third series of Happy Valley and said he was open to opportunities that might take him to New York or Los Angeles. Those were his intentions at the time of the interview, rather than a complete account of his later career.

He also called leaving an emotional decision, saying he loved the job and owed the show a great deal. A PBS MASTERPIECE Season 4 farewell feature captures that feeling: Norton said letting go of Sidney felt sad, like “saying goodbye to a friend.” That farewell reflects his attachment to the character; his explanation for choosing to leave comes from the separate What to Watch interview.
When did Norton leave Grantchester?
ITV confirmed in April 2018 that Norton would leave after the fourth series. An Irish Independent report credited to Press Association Senior Entertainment Correspondent Laura Harding quoted Kudos executive producer Diederick Santer describing the fourth series as Norton’s final episodes and saying the vicarage would not be vacant for long.

Was James Norton fired from Grantchester?
The cited interview supports the account that Norton chose to move on for a mix of story and professional reasons. It does not say he was fired or that a conflict with the production prompted his departure. The available evidence therefore supports his stated explanation, not speculation about a behind-the-scenes dispute.
