Fans were excited for Shangri-La Frontier Season 2 for four connected reasons: a premise that turns bad-game experience into a real advantage, a continuous two-cour follow-up that promised sustained progression, the return of its core cast and rivals, and new high-stakes challenges, including the Abyss City arc and another of the Seven Colossi. Season 2 has already aired. It premiered in Japan on October 13, 2024. As of October 8, 2026, the official anime site lists Season 3 for January 10, 2027, in Japan.
One caveat frames everything below. No survey or published fan-sentiment study has measured which motivations are most common. The reasons here are well-grounded explanations drawn from the show’s premise, its format, its character continuity and the story developments its producers announced.

The premise: a gamer whose bad-game skills become a weapon
Rakuro Hizutome, known as Sunraku, spends his time mastering poorly made games before he challenges Shangri-La Frontier, a major VR game. The hook is that the habits he built in flawed, unbalanced titles, including exploiting bugs and pushing through frustration, matter in a polished, expansive world. That inversion is the core appeal. The official anime site describes the series as “Game x Fantasy” and introduces it this way: “Shangri-La Frontier takes gaming experiences that everyone can relate to and uses them to create an entirely new type of fantasy story.” That is the producers’ own framing, not independent critical consensus, but it explains why the concept lands with players who have ever grinded through a game they did not enjoy. A two-cour follow-up that could go deeper
When Season 2 was announced, Crunchyroll reported that it would be another continuous two-cour run and would begin in October 2024. That mattered to viewers for a simple reason. A continuous run gives a story room to develop its world and its tests, rather than offering a short special or a brief bonus season. The season began on October 13, 2024, in Japan, which was the start date fans had been waiting for. Crunchyroll’s announcement.

The cast and rivalries returned
Season 2 kept the ensemble that gives the series its social texture. The official site profiles Sunraku, Psyger-0, Arthur Pencilgon, OiKatzo and Emul, and Kodansha’s synopsis emphasizes companions, a widening world and encounters with rivals. For many viewers, the pleasure of a sequel in an ensemble show is seeing established relationships and rivalries carried forward, with alliances that can shift as the stakes rise. Here, that continuity is an editorial reading of the sources rather than a measured response from audiences.
New arcs with identifiable stakes
Crunchyroll’s coverage from January 19, 2025 said the next arc, following episode 15, was known as the Abyss City arc, and it described Sunraku taking on another of the Seven Colossi. Those details gave the season concrete targets. A fan does not need to know the full plot to understand what is at stake when a protagonist with an unusual method faces a named boss in a new environment. Exploration and progression are the engines of this kind of story, and naming the arc and the challenge made the progression visible before the season arrived.

What the popularity figures show, and what they do not
The franchise has substantial reach. Kodansha reported more than 10 million manga copies in worldwide circulation in its 2024 announcement, and the same publisher’s October 11, 2024 article states that the manga won the 47th Kodansha Manga Award in the shōnen category. The official anime site says the original web novel has more than 500 million pageviews; that page carries no publication year, so no date is assigned here. Kodansha’s synopsis also describes 30 million players in the fictional game Shangri-La Frontier. That figure belongs to the story world and is not a real audience statistic.
These numbers establish that the property has a large audience. They do not show how many Season 2 viewers were excited, or why. The motivations listed above are the most defensible explanations, not measured rankings.

The official anime site links to Crunchyroll for English-language streaming, and Crunchyroll was named as the streaming partner when Season 2 was announced. Catalog access varies by country, so confirm availability in your region before you subscribe. Readers who want the story before the next season can start with Kodansha’s manga, which is the adaptation source. Check the volume and language edition at your retailer.
