A professional wrestling ring is square, and “the squared circle” is a figurative nickname that joins that shape to the older word “ring.” The phrase describes wrestling vocabulary, not the platform’s geometry. The traditional explanation links “ring” to earlier fighting spaces drawn as circles, but the sources available for this article do not document who first used the phrase in professional wrestling or when.
Why the fighting space is still called a ring
“Ring” names the fighting space, not its outline. The traditional account is that the word comes from combat contests held inside roughly drawn circles. When the platform later became square, the word stayed. A ring’s shape is a matter of construction and convention; its name is a matter of inheritance.
What “the squared circle” means in wrestling
The phrase is deliberately contradictory: a square where the word suggests a circle. Wrestling media use it as ordinary terminology. WWE’s editorial coverage, including its history of WCW and a wrestler profile, uses the expression in this way. It is an evocative label for the ring, not a claim that the platform is round or that the term measures anything.
The traditional explanation and its limits
General reference accounts connect the phrase to combat exhibitions held in roughly drawn circles, and that is the explanation most often offered. It is a reasonable account of how the vocabulary may have developed, but it is not a documented origin story for professional wrestling specifically. No named coiner and no dated primary source tying the phrase to the wrestling industry have been identified.

What is and is not established
- The standard WWE arena ring is square. WWE’s feature on its ring design, dated to about 2014, gives the regular ring as 20 feet by 20 feet. That is WWE’s own standard for its arena ring, not an industry-wide rule.
- “The squared circle” appears as regular wrestling terminology in WWE’s editorial coverage.
- The word “ring” persists for square platforms, and the circle link is a traditional explanation rather than a verified history.
- Not established: the first person to use the phrase, the date it entered professional wrestling, or a primary source that ties its first use to wrestling.
Square is not the only permitted fighting shape
The square ring describes conventional professional wrestling. Other combat settings use other shapes, and a square is not mandatory across every licensed fighting space.
| Setting | Shape | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| WWE standard arena ring | Square, 20 feet by 20 feet | WWE ring design feature, dated to about 2014; applies to WWE’s arena ring, not all promotions |
| Fighting rings under Virginia state regulation | Square, hexagonal, or octagonal | Virginia regulation; date not stated in the cited text |
What people in the sport have said
Mark Carpenter, proprietor of M.T.J. Manufacturing, told WWE in the same ring design feature: “The current ring has no springs.” That remark concerns the ring WWE was describing at the time. It should not be read as a statement about present-day equipment or about every promotion’s ring.

Shilpa Bakre, media services director at USA Boxing, answered an ESPN reader’s question about why a boxing space is called a ring with: “The squared circle!” It is a playful reply, not a historical explanation.

Readers who ask why a boxing ring is called that “when it’s clearly a square” are asking the same question. If the traditional explanation is right, the word outlived the circle it first described, and later square platforms inherited it. Bakre’s joke makes the same point with less formality: the name is older than the shape it now names.
