Whoopi Goldberg fought back tears during a May 2024 segment of The View, and according to TheWrap’s coverage of the episode, her tears did not fall. The segment centered on Mya, a 15-year-old with neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2), who received a surprise visit from actor Sofia Carson.
What happened on the May 2024 episode
According to Disney’s account published May 8, 2024, The View co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg and Sara Haines welcomed Mya and her mother, Tanya, to talk about Mya’s experience with brain tumors. Disney presented the feature as part of brain cancer awareness month and as the show’s first on-air wish granted, tied to the company’s World Wish Day activities.

The segment ended with a surprise. Mya admired Carson for her role as Evie in Disney’s Descendants films, and Carson appeared in person to meet her.
Who Mya is and what Disney reported about her
Disney identified Mya as 15 at the time of the segment and said she lives with NF2. In the same 2024 account, Disney reported that Mya was diagnosed at six months old, had undergone 89 chemotherapy treatments, had lost most of her hearing, and was preparing for her fourth brain surgery.

These details describe Mya’s situation as of May 2024. They are not a current medical update, and nothing in the available coverage establishes how her health has changed since then.
Sofia Carson’s message and the planned costume
Disney quoted Carson speaking to Mya: “To be able to be your wish is one of the greatest honors of my life and you are my hero and everyone here’s hero.”
Rank #2
Disney also said Mya would receive a custom Evie costume made especially for her. That was a one-off gift for Mya; the coverage does not indicate that a retail version exists or is available to buy.
Did Whoopi Goldberg actually cry?
The headline overstates the reaction. TheWrap’s May 2, 2024 report said Sara Haines teared up during Mya’s story, while Goldberg held her composure at first. As the segment went on, Goldberg became visibly emotional, took slow breaths and worked to keep control of herself, but TheWrap said her tears did not fall. Mya and her mother cried when Carson appeared.

The accurate description is that Goldberg fought back tears. TheWrap’s own headline used that wording: “‘The View’: Whoopi Struggles to Hold Back Tears After Joyful Make-a-Wish Surprise.” The distinction matters because “cried” describes tears falling, which the reporting does not support.

- For the reaction: rely on TheWrap’s description of the moment, which is the contemporaneous report that describes Goldberg’s face and composure.
- For Mya’s background and the surprise: rely on Disney’s May 8, 2024 post, which is the official account of the segment.
- For current status: do not rely on the 2024 treatment and surgery figures. They describe a point in time.
