The headline’s “collapse” is a comic exaggeration. Goldberg was signaling exasperation at a co-host’s remark, not fainting or suffering a medical problem, and the audience laughed before the panel moved to commercial.
The exchange that led to the moment
The segment was a Hot Topics discussion about the Lopez–Affleck split, which had returned to the news cycle at the time. Sunny Hostin said the relationship had been “supposed to be true love.” Goldberg pushed back: “No you said it was true love! You’re the only one who believed that.”

Hostin then softened her position: “I think maybe it was true love. And then just something happened.” That was the cue for Goldberg’s gesture. She dropped her head onto the table in an exaggerated display of frustration, a bit meant to tease Hostin for being the one at the table who had believed in the romance.
Why “collapse” is the wrong word for what viewers saw
Contemporary accounts from E! and Entertainment Weekly describe the moment as a comedic gesture, not a health emergency. Co-hosts Sara Haines and Alyssa Farah Griffin treated it as the end of the topic, the audience laughed, and the show went to a break. Nothing in the reporting suggests Goldberg was hurt or unwell.
#1 Best Overall
The headline borrows the vocabulary of a dramatic fall, which is a common tabloid device. The accurate description is a head-on-table reaction, the kind of physical punchline the show uses regularly.
What Ben Affleck said about the breakup
The panel’s discussion followed Affleck’s interview with GQ, published March 25, 2025, two days before the broadcast. E! quoted him as saying:
Rank #2
- “There’s a tendency to look at breakups and want to identify root causes or something.”
- “The truth is much more quotidian than probably people would believe or would be interesting.”
- “There’s no scandal, no soap opera, no intrigue.”
These remarks are Affleck’s words as reported by E! from the GQ interview. The segment did not establish any private reason for the separation, and this article does not offer one. Speculation about the cause of the divorce is not supported by the reporting on the broadcast.
How the quotes should be attributed
The quotes from Goldberg and Hostin are reproduced as E! transcribed them from the broadcast. ComingSoon also reported the segment. The full episode was not available to check against a transcript, so readers who need exact wording should compare against a full recording of the March 27, 2025 episode before reusing a line in print.
Rank #3
For the sequence of events, the reports agree: Hostin’s “true love” remark, Goldberg’s reply, Hostin’s qualification, the head-on-table gesture, laughter, and the break.
