Whoopi Goldberg was “censored” on The View on September 30, 2024, in the narrow sense that the broadcast audio cut out while she was saying a profanity. She had just called Donald Trump “unhinged” while the show discussed his attacks on Kamala Harris. Contemporaneous reports describe an on-air audio cut. They do not describe a formal punishment, a network-wide policy, or the technical details of who triggered the cut.
What Goldberg was reacting to
The exchange took place in the second segment of the September 30, 2024 episode, according to TheWrap’s same-day report. The hosts were discussing Trump’s latest attack on Harris, including his description of her as “mentally disabled.” After clips of his campaign-rally remarks played, Goldberg said she was exhausted by the rhetoric and called Trump “unhinged.”

She also complained that, after months of public discussion about President Joe Biden’s mental state, she had heard little comparable scrutiny of Trump. The Independent’s video report from the same day gives a second account of her reaction. In it, she criticized his mispronunciation of Harris’s name and said she was tired of being threatened by “lies and things that don’t make sense.”
The moment the audio cut
Later in the segment, Goldberg told the audience that she expected Trump to say something stupid, and used a profanity to make the point. The broadcast audio then dropped out. According to TheWrap, the audience laughed and her cohosts giggled. Cohost Sunny Hostin then said, “They caught it.”

The three layers of this incident are easy to blur together, so it helps to separate them:
| Layer | What happened | What the reports establish |
|---|---|---|
| The remarks Goldberg was responding to | Trump’s rally clips attacking Harris, including the “mentally disabled” description | Described in TheWrap and The Independent reports of September 30, 2024 |
| Goldberg’s on-air reaction | She called Trump “unhinged,” criticized his treatment of Harris, and used profanity | Quoted in both reports |
| The audio cut | The broadcast sound dropped out during the profanity | Reported by TheWrap; the mechanism, operator and timing are not stated |
| Consequences | No sanction described | Not stated in the contemporaneous reports |
Why the word “censored” needs qualifying
Headlines about the incident used “censored” to describe the audio cut, not a decision to bar her comments. The cut removed the profanity from the broadcast, and that is the only act of censorship the early reports actually describe. Nothing in them shows that ABC ordered the cut as a response to her criticism of Trump, or that it reflects a standing rule about language on the program.

What the reports do not establish
- Whether any disciplinary or editorial action followed the broadcast.
- Who operated the audio cut, or how the delay or mute was triggered.
- Whether ABC has a general policy on profanity or political commentary on The View.
Readers searching for a follow-up story should check reporting from after September 30, 2024 before assuming any consequence occurred. The contemporaneous accounts cover only the broadcast itself.
Key quotations
Preserve the context when quoting these lines:
- Whoopi Goldberg, The View, as quoted by The Independent, September 30, 2024: “I’m tired of being threatened by lies and things that don’t make sense, and I want more people to pay attention who do stuff in the media, because this man is unhinged.”
- Sunny Hostin, The View, as reported by TheWrap, September 30, 2024: “They caught it.”
Both lines are attributed to the broadcast as reported by those outlets. Neither outlet’s account is a transcript of the full segment, so quote them as reported rather than as a verified transcript.
