9-1-1 recast Harry Grant because original actor Marcanthonee Jon Reis was ready to move on, according to showrunner Tim Minear. The change also served a story purpose: it let the show make Athena’s shock at seeing how much her son had grown part of the episode itself.
Who plays Harry in Season 7?
Elijah M. Cooper plays Harry Grant when the character returns in Season 7. ABC’s current cast listing identifies Cooper as Harry, Athena Grant’s son. Before the recast, ABC’s January 9, 2024 cast announcement listed Marcanthonee Jon Reis as Harry.
The change was apparent when Harry returned to Athena and Bobby’s home. Athena had expected him to still be living with Michael in Miami, and his changed appearance catches her off guard.
Why was Harry recast on 9-1-1?
Reis was ready to move on
Minear told TVLine in an April 4, 2024 report that he contacted Reis and pitched him the story. “I think he loved the story, but was just ready to do something new,” Minear said.

That is the explanation Minear gave for the performer change. His account does not establish that Reis was fired, that there was a dispute or contract issue, or what Reis planned to do next.
The new casting fit Athena’s story
Minear said the recast also fit the episode’s theme: Athena sees how much Harry has grown and does not quite recognize him. “If you’re going to bring in a new actor in a beloved role, you want to acknowledge the fact that something has changed,” he told TVLine. He described the choice as an organic fit for a story in which Athena looks at her son and realizes she barely recognizes him.

Minear also said, “Part of this story is about not recognizing your own kid, so it also felt like not a pun and not a joke.” He added, with a laugh, “Ironically, I think the actors are about the same age.” The recast should not be explained as a choice to make Harry look older than Reis did.
How the episode uses Harry’s return
The Season 7 episode was 9-1-1’s 100th, according to TVLine. Harry returns home with a warrant connected to a conflict with a convenience-store owner. He avoids jail but is ordered to complete 100 hours of community service under Athena’s watch.
A parallel call brings Athena to a woman with face blindness who mistakes her own son for an intruder and shoots him. The two stories are not identical, but the episode places them alongside each other around a mother’s failure to recognize her child. That narrative connection helps explain why Minear saw Harry’s changed appearance and the recast as working together.
