Contemporaneous coverage reported that Pirro appeared to suggest Goldberg had “Trump Derangement Syndrome.” Goldberg objected, saying she was tired of conversations that began with the claim that “Mexicans are liars and rapists.”
How the on-air argument escalated
As the discussion returned to immigration, Pirro said it was horrible when people who should not be in the country murdered American citizens’ children. Goldberg responded, “You know what’s horrible? When the president of the United States whips up people to beat the hell out of people.”

Goldberg then said, “Say goodbye! I’m done.” The show went to commercial. After the break, Pirro was absent, and Goldberg apologized for losing her cool. She also said, “I don’t like being accused of being hysterical.” The Washington Post’s contemporaneous account describes the on-air exchange and its immediate aftermath: The Washington Post.
What Goldberg and Pirro said happened backstage
The accounts of their interaction after the segment conflict. Pirro later told Sean Hannity that Goldberg swore at her and told her to get out of the building. Goldberg’s next-day account differed: she said Pirro had been upset before the segment, called the people at the table an unrepeatable name, and pointed a finger at Goldberg while yelling after the segment.

Goldberg acknowledged using “choice words,” but denied spitting on or intimidating Pirro and denied that anyone chased Pirro out. In responding to Pirro’s account, Goldberg said, “We treat everybody with respect,” and, “But you cannot come and call people names.” TheWrap reported Goldberg’s response: TheWrap.
The on-air dispute is documented; the backstage episode is a pair of conflicting accounts from the participants. The contemporaneous reports do not independently establish which account is accurate.

What the exchange was about
The argument was not simply a personal clash. It unfolded amid disagreements over Trump, the language used by his critics and immigration. Goldberg’s comments challenged Pirro’s framing of immigration and invoked the president’s influence on political behavior; Pirro’s remarks focused on crimes committed by people she said should not be in the country.
The title’s word “shades” is an interpretation of Goldberg’s sharp response. The sequence of remarks, the commercial break and the conflicting backstage accounts give readers the context to judge the exchange for themselves.
