Sha’Carri Richardson is an American sprinter best known for the 100 meters. She became the 2023 world champion in Budapest with a 10.65-second run, a World Championships record. That win explains why headlines have called her “the fastest woman in the world”—but it does not mean she holds the women’s 100m world record or is necessarily the fastest woman today.
Who is Sha’Carri Richardson?
Richardson is a U.S. track-and-field sprinter whose career rose from youth competition in Dallas to Louisiana State University and the professional circuit. The 100 meters is her signature event, though she has also competed in the 200 meters and the 4×100-meter relay. Her athlete profiles are available from World Athletics and Team USA.
From youth competition to the senior ranks

Why is Sha’Carri Richardson called “the fastest woman in the world”?
The phrase refers most clearly to her victory in the women’s 100m at the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest. Richardson ran 10.65 seconds, winning the world title and setting a World Championships record. World Athletics described the performance as joint fifth on the all-time list at the time of its feature. It was a major championship achievement, not a world record.

The distinction matters: World Athletics’ 2025 competition document lists Florence Griffith Joyner’s 10.49 seconds as the women’s 100m world record. Richardson’s 10.65 is the championship record for the World Championships; Griffith Joyner’s 10.49 is the world record. The marks describe different records and should not be conflated. Did Sha’Carri Richardson win Olympic gold?
Yes—in the 4x100m relay at the Paris 2024 Olympics. She won silver in the individual 100m, not gold. Those results made Paris her Olympic debut and gave her medals in both events.

What is known about her more recent seasons?
In September 2025, the Associated Press described an injury that had affected Richardson’s season and reported her 11.07-second run at U.S. nationals before the Tokyo World Championships. The AP article also quoted Richardson discussing therapy, selfhood and how she defines success.
