She is also Marvel’s Ironheart: in the comics, Riri builds her own Iron Man-style armor and becomes a hero. Marvel’s Ironheart series continues her MCU story after the events of the film.
Who is Riri Williams in Wakanda Forever?
Riri Williams is an American inventor from Chicago. Dominique Thorne plays her in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, introducing the character to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Marvel describes her as a young, exceptionally gifted inventor determined to make her mark.
Her superhero name is Ironheart. That name is shared across the comics and the screen versions, but the events of her comics origin should not be treated as a complete account of what happens to her in the film.
What is Riri Williams’ comics origin?
Riri made her comics debut in Invincible Iron Man (2015) #7. Marvel’s account introduces her as a teenage genius studying at M.I.T. and working on Iron Man-style armor. She ultimately assembles a suit of her own from her knowledge and the materials available to her, rather than gaining powers through an accident.

In the comics, her path toward heroism is shaped by personal loss. Marvel recounts that Riri’s mother and stepfather recognized her as a super-genius when she was five; when she was ten, a shooting killed her best friend and stepfather. Later, after Tony Stark goes missing, she uses her armor to stop an escape at the New Mexico State Penitentiary. These are details of the comics continuity, not confirmed details of her film origin.
How do the comics and MCU versions differ?
| Question | Comics | MCU |
|---|---|---|
| How is Riri introduced? | Her comics debut is Invincible Iron Man (2015) #7. | Dominique Thorne portrays her in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. |
| How does she become Ironheart? | She builds her own armor and enters hero work using her intelligence and engineering skills. | Marvel describes her broadly as an inventor with her own approach to iron suits; the official material cited here does not establish that the screen origin duplicates the comics events. |
| What comes next? | Her stories continue in later Ironheart comics, including a 2018 series. | Marvel places the Ironheart series after the events of Wakanda Forever. |
| What is her Chicago connection? | Marvel’s comics history frames Riri as a young Black girl from Chicago’s South Side. | The series synopsis returns her to her hometown of Chicago. |
Where does Ironheart fit after Wakanda Forever?
Marvel’s official Ironheart series page places the series after Wakanda Forever and says it returns Riri to Chicago. Marvel lists the series’ release date as June 24, 2025. Its synopsis establishes the character, premise and chronology; it should not be read as a scene-by-scene explanation of her role in the film.

Which comics should you read to follow Riri’s origin?
A direct starting point is Ironheart: The Saga of Riri Williams, a trade paperback published by Marvel on August 23, 2023. It collects Invincible Iron Man (2015) #1–14, including the issues that establish Riri’s self-made armor and her emergence as Ironheart. Marvel’s collection page provides its details.
For a later story rather than the earliest origin, Ironheart: Meant To Fly collects Ironheart (2018) #1–12 and includes a storyline involving Riri, Shuri and Wakanda. It is a follow-on option, not a collection of her first appearance.

What does the name Ironheart represent?
Riri’s hero identity grows from the work she does herself: designing and building armor rather than inheriting Tony Stark’s identity. In a 2018 interview about the comics, writer Dr. Eve L. Ewing said, “As a character, Riri is going to be figuring out just what she wants Ironheart to represent.” That comment concerns the comic series, not the MCU film.
