Neteyam is absent from the living Sully family in Avatar: Fire and Ash because he died in Avatar: The Way of Water. The third film follows Jake and Neytiri’s family as they grieve his death and try to move forward. Jamie Flatters is listed in official cast material, but that credit does not confirm that Neteyam returns alive or explain whether he appears in any other form.
Why isn’t Neteyam with the Sullys in Avatar 3?
Neteyam, Jake and Neytiri’s eldest child, was killed during the RDA conflict in Avatar: The Way of Water. Avatar: Fire and Ash picks up after that loss, with the family mourning him rather than treating his death as undone. That makes his absence part of the sequel’s story, not a sign that the films have forgotten him. The Sullys’ conflict continues as they try to protect Spider, encounter the Mangkwan, also known as the Ash People, led by Varang, and face a renewed RDA threat, according to D23’s story overview.
How does Neteyam’s death affect the family?
Lo’ak carries guilt
Lo’ak blames himself for what happened to his older brother and must take on responsibility earlier than he expected. Britain Dalton, who plays Lo’ak, described the impact in an Avatar.com interview: “When Neteyam dies… that’s no way that he ever imagined being finally able to be seen. He blames himself.”

Neytiri is grieving
Neytiri’s loss affects her sense of purpose and her relationships with her family. In a feature from The Walt Disney Company, Zoe Saldaña said: “Obviously, [her grief] is impacting her relationships with her family, because she doesn’t have a will to do anything. She’s losing purpose and she’s starting to question everything.”
Is Jamie Flatters in Avatar: Fire and Ash?
Official cast materials list Jamie Flatters, and an official Japanese 20th Century Studios page associates him with Neteyam. Those credits establish a cast listing, but do not say what scenes Flatters appears in or what form any appearance might take. They are not evidence that Neteyam is alive in the film’s present-day story.

So the careful answer is that Neteyam is dead and not a living member of the family at the start of Fire and Ash; the cited official material does not settle whether he has a limited appearance. Treat claims about a return or the precise extent of his role as unconfirmed unless an official source specifies it.
Did the filmmakers explain why Neteyam is absent?
The official material establishes the story reason: Neteyam died in the previous film, and his family is grieving. It does not provide a separate behind-the-scenes explanation for a creative decision to keep him out of the living family. There is no need to infer a production motive to understand his role in the sequel.
