The dragon chose him rather than the reverse, and the show confirms this on screen. What the show does not explain is why Seasmoke accepted him, and that question is still a matter of theory.
How the bond happens on screen
The story runs across two episodes, and it helps to separate what each one establishes.
Episode 6: the failed claim and the dragon’s departure
Ser Steffon Darklyn tries to claim Seasmoke and fails. The dragon does not stay with him. It leaves and pursues Addam, which sets up the reveal in the next episode.
Episode 7: Rhaenyra finds the new rider
In Episode 7, Rhaenyra tracks Seasmoke and Addam down. Addam explains that the dragon found and claimed him, not the other way around. TVLine’s recap quotes Rhaenyra’s reaction: “You have done something I feared impossible, Addam of Hull.” The episode confirms Addam as the rider and shows Rhaenyra accepting him into her cause.

Who Addam is on the show
Addam is a shipwright associated with House Velaryon. In his meeting with Rhaenyra, he describes his mother as a shipbuilder and his father as a man “of no consequence.” Episode recaps report that Corlys privately recognizes him as his son. The show, in other words, presents Addam as Corlys Velaryon’s illegitimate son. That parentage is the show’s version, and it is the one to use when discussing the series.
Why Seasmoke chose him: what is established and what is theory
The show establishes who the rider is. It does not establish why the bond formed. TIME points out the puzzle created by Laenor’s earlier escape and cites the idea that a dragon cannot be ridden by another human while its rider is still living. The Ringer raises several other possibilities. Each of these is a theory that fans and critics have proposed, not an answer the series has confirmed.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Book and show differ on parentage
Fire & Blood by George R. R. Martin is the source book for the series, and it is useful background for anyone comparing adaptation choices. According to TIME’s reading of the novel, Addam and Alyn are considered dragonseed and are rumored to be Laenor’s sons. The show places them as Corlys’s sons instead. Book details should therefore not be carried over to the series without checking the episodes. The book account is a separate source with its own internal logic, and the two versions do not match.
