He later said he still lacked a signed contract as the season approached and objected to a morals clause the studio added after their initial deal. Accounts also connect his departure to a growing concern that Trapper John was losing prominence as Hawkeye took a larger role.
What led Wayne Rogers to leave M*A*S*H?
Rogers played Captain “Trapper” John McIntyre for the show’s first three seasons, from its 1972 debut through 1975. The Television Academy counts 72 episodes featuring Rogers as Trapper. Television Academy: Wayne Rogers

The clearest explanation from Rogers himself centers on the contract. In a Television Academy feature, he recalled that the show was heading into its third season and he still had not signed. He also said Fox would not remove a morals clause added after their initial deal. Television Academy: M*A*S*H’s Love and War
The clause’s full wording and its legal effect are not established in the available accounts. Rogers identified it as a problem, but the precise terms of the dispute should not be assumed.

Did Trapper John’s reduced prominence matter?
Retrospective accounts describe a second concern: Rogers felt Trapper was being diminished as Hawkeye became more central to the series. The Encyclopedia of Alabama’s biography of Rogers connects his departure to that perceived shift. A statement by Rogers’s manager, reproduced in the Los Angeles Times obituary, said the co-starring role Rogers had been promised had not materialized as expected.
These accounts describe a change in the ensemble’s balance, not a personal accusation against Alan Alda. They also do not make the creative concern an alternative to the contract dispute: both issues could have contributed to Rogers’s decision.

Was money the reason he left?
The cited accounts do not establish whether compensation negotiations played a role or how decisive they were. It is therefore not possible to say that money was either the cause or irrelevant. What Rogers specifically discussed was the unsigned contract and the morals clause; reporting and biographical accounts add his concern about Trapper’s place in the show.
