Her background, in Capcom’s words
Capcom’s manual introduces her with the line “Welcome to Africa. My name is Sheva Alomar.” The same manual describes her combat skills as excellent and her agility as exceptional, and says her past fighting bioterrorism in her homeland is what drives her. These lines are character text from the game’s manual, not statements by any real performer or person.
The manual’s profile
The manual’s profile is the most direct statement of who she is in the game. It frames her history as a motivation rather than a backstory told in full, so readers looking for a complete life story will not find one in that document.
The family account
A separate Capcom feature, the Chris Redfield character page, adds a more personal detail: Sheva lost both parents in a bioterror attack, and her resolve helps rekindle Chris’s optimism. This comes from a different piece of Capcom material than the manual, so it is best read as Capcom’s additional character context rather than a line from the game’s opening.

Her role in Resident Evil 5
The mission in the Kijuju Autonomous Zone
Capcom’s official timeline places the game’s incident in March 2009 and summarizes Chris’s arrival in the Kijuju Autonomous Zone to investigate a bio-weapons black market. Sheva is listed among the game’s main characters, alongside Chris, Jill Valentine, and Wesker. That March 2009 date is the in-game setting, not the game’s release date.
Freeing Jill
Sheva’s role goes beyond the initial partnership. Capcom’s Jill Valentine feature says Chris and Sheva wrest the control device from Jill, freeing her from Wesker’s control. Readers should note that this is described in Capcom’s character material for Jill, so it is the same story event viewed from Jill’s side.

Scope: the video-game continuity
This answer concerns the video-game continuity. Capcom’s timeline separately identifies its parallel-world live-action films, and those films should not be assumed to use the same characters or the same storyline as the games. If you are comparing adaptations, check which version a source is describing before drawing conclusions.
