He appears to work as an Ostania diplomat, but his real job is as an officer in the State Security Service, commonly called the Secret Police. Earnest and capable at work, Yuri is also fiercely protective of Yor—and deeply suspicious of her husband, Loid.
Who is Yuri Briar?
Yuri is Yor’s younger brother. The official SPY×FAMILY TV anime character profile describes him as an earnest, hardworking young man whose actions are guided by concern for his sister and for Ostania.
That combination matters: Yuri is not simply a gag character built around his affection for Yor. He has a serious professional life and a strong sense of duty, even as his attachment to his sister creates some of the series’ most exaggerated family comedy.
What does Yuri do?
His public identity: a diplomat
Yuri’s public-facing job is in diplomacy, giving him a plausible place in political and official settings.

His secret job: State Security Service officer
In reality, Yuri works for Ostania’s State Security Service, an organization commonly known as the Secret Police. Its work places him on the side of the state’s efforts to identify spies. That creates an unusual tension: his work can put him near the kinds of threats that matter to the Forger family, while his personal feelings make him especially suspicious of Loid.
The official profile confirms both Yuri’s diplomatic cover and his security-service role. The pressure this creates for the Forgers is a consequence of those roles and of Yuri’s antagonism toward Loid, rather than a separate official description of his story function.

Why is Yuri so protective of Yor?
Yuri’s devotion to his older sister shapes how he behaves. The anime profile says he acts for Yor’s safety as well as for his country; Bandai Namco’s licensed SPYxANYA: Operation Memories character page likewise describes his deep love for Yor and his open hostility toward Loid.
That protectiveness is played for comedy, especially when Yuri’s suspicions collide with Loid’s place in Yor’s life. The official character descriptions support reading him as intensely devoted and antagonistic toward Loid; they do not establish a romantic interpretation of his feelings for Yor.

What makes Yuri an interesting character?
- Two opposing roles: His diplomatic cover and security-service work place him in both public political life and covert state work.
- Professional seriousness: The official anime profile presents him as earnest and hardworking, not merely as an overexcited brother.
- Family-driven conflict: His desire to protect Yor fuels his distrust of Loid, making his private loyalties collide with the larger spy story.
In a 2022 official anime announcement, Yuri’s Japanese voice actor, Kensho Ono, described the character’s appeal as the contrast between his friendly young-man image and much darker inner thoughts about people other than his sister. That is an unofficial translation of Ono’s Japanese remarks, so it is best treated as a paraphrase rather than an authorized English quotation. The announcement also identifies Ono as Yuri’s voice actor.
Who voices Yuri in the Japanese version?
Kensho Ono voices Yuri in Japanese, according to the official anime character profile. The anime’s May 21, 2022 announcement about Yuri’s character design also quotes Ono speaking about taking on the role.
