Liam Aiken is the actor most often named as a possible Harry Potter before Daniel Radcliffe—but the evidence supports calling him a reported contender, not a confirmed runner-up. Contemporary coverage included Aiken among rumored candidates, while later accounts said director Chris Columbus favored him. The available reporting does not establish that Aiken received an offer or was formally selected.
Why Liam Aiken is the leading answer
In its August 22, 2000 casting-announcement coverage, The Guardian named Aiken among several boys rumored to be in contention. A later overview says Columbus was set on Aiken, while attributing that claim to earlier reporting. Taken together, these accounts explain why Aiken is the name most associated with the role—but they do not document a definitive final shortlist or prove he was the runner-up.
The distinction matters: “almost cast” can imply a formal offer or a final decision narrowly missed. The reporting establishes a reported contender and a later claim of director preference, not either of those stronger conclusions.
How Daniel Radcliffe came to audition
Radcliffe was not simply an unknown found through an open call. Columbus had seen him in the BBC adaptation of David Copperfield and wanted him for Harry, but Radcliffe’s parents initially did not want him to take the role. The Guardian’s 2001 account of the casting search says the production also approached agents for children aged nine to eleven and invited applications through the film’s official website.

Producer David Heyman later recalled that he and screenwriter Steve Kloves encountered the Radcliffes at a theatre performance. Heyman renewed the request for Radcliffe to audition and persuaded his parents to reconsider. In a 2011 oral history, Heyman said, “We had three or four other boys in the mix, and several Rons and Hermiones.” That recollection confirms other boys were under consideration, but does not identify them as a ranked shortlist.
What the other names mean
| Actor | What the reporting supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Liam Aiken | Named in contemporary rumors; later reporting attributes a preference for him to Columbus. | A formal offer, confirmed finalist status, or definitive runner-up. |
| Jake Lloyd | Named among rumored candidates in The Guardian’s August 2000 report. | A confirmed audition, offer, or place on a final shortlist. |
| Haley Joel Osment | Named in contemporary casting discussion. Heyman later recalled that Steven Spielberg showed him a photograph of Osment during director discussions. | A formal audition or offer for Harry. |
| Gabriel Thomson | An Associated Press report carried by the Los Angeles Times mentioned the contemporary belief that he had been “tapped.” | A confirmed selection; the report presented this as a widely believed claim, not a verified casting decision. |
| Tom Felton and Nicholas Hoult | A later overview recounts Felton auditioning for Harry and Ron before he was cast as Draco, and Hoult recalling auditions for Harry and other roles. | That either was close to winning the part. |
These accounts describe different kinds of evidence—rumor, a recollection of director interest, or an audition story. They should not be collapsed into a single list of finalists.

When the casting became official
Warner Bros. announced Radcliffe as Harry, Rupert Grint as Ron, and Emma Watson as Hermione on August 21, 2000. The announcement was reported the following day by The Guardian and the Associated Press via the Los Angeles Times. Columbus said, “Then, Dan walked into the room and we all knew we had found Harry.” J. K. Rowling, after seeing Radcliffe’s screen test, said she did not think Columbus “could have found a better Harry,” according to The Guardian’s report.
Why reported audition totals differ
The casting figures in contemporary and later coverage describe different things. The Guardian reported in 2000 that 40,000 applications were reviewed after a BBC Newsround appeal. A 2001 Guardian feature said 60,000 children reportedly auditioned just for Harry after an open invitation on the film’s official website. The reports do not establish one definitive, directly comparable total, so the figures should be kept separate and attributed to their source and year.

Was there a nationality requirement?
Contemporary reporting connected the casting discussion around Osment to Rowling’s stated preference that Harry be British. Later accounts also describe nationality as a constraint. This supports describing a reported production preference, not claiming that a complete written casting rule has been established. The Guardian covered the contemporary discussion in its August 2000 announcement report.
