The couple married in 2018, when Pete was mayor of South Bend, Indiana, and they adopted twins in 2021. Chasten has since written an adult memoir, a young adult edition of that memoir, and a children’s picture book, Papa’s Coming Home.
Who Chasten Buttigieg is
Simon & Schuster’s author page describes Chasten as a teacher and advocate who grew up in Traverse City, Michigan, and says the family lives in Northern Michigan. That description is the publisher’s own, and it is undated on the page, so treat it as a general profile rather than a current job title. For a source that places dated milestones on his work, see Equality Forum’s 2023 biography, which is linked below.
Equality Forum’s biography says Chasten taught in public schools in Chicago and Indiana. It also says he later joined the South Bend Civic Theater as director of curriculum for civic education. The biography describes him as the first gay “first gentleman” of a city mayor in America, a label tied to his role in South Bend.
How they met and married
Equality Forum says Chasten and Pete met on a dating app in 2015 and married in 2018, while Pete was South Bend’s mayor. In a 2025 interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Chasten said the couple’s life has centered on travel. He described meeting Pete and Pete’s proposal as happening at O’Hare International Airport.

Children and family life
TIME reported in 2023 that the couple adopted twins in August 2021. At adoption, TIME gave their names as Penelope Rose and Joseph August. Simon & Schuster’s author biography refers to them as Penelope and Gus. Both names refer to the same children, so the difference is a matter of full names versus the shorter form used in the publisher’s biography.

The 2025 children’s book draws on this household. It was released May 20, 2025, and follows Jojo and Rosie, their dog Buddy, and their two fathers, called Daddy and Papa in the story, as they prepare to welcome a parent home from a trip.
The 2020 campaign
Equality Forum says Chasten took leave from teaching to support Pete’s 2020 presidential campaign. It lists his campaign roles as spokesperson, advisor, and social media manager. ABC News covered his advocacy during the campaign, including his meetings with LGBTQ young people around the country. The ABC News video interview is dated February 21, 2020, and it is contemporaneous campaign-period reporting rather than a current profile.
