Vance Luther Boelter pleaded guilty in federal court to charges arising from the June 14, 2025 attacks on Minnesota lawmakers and their families. On July 23, 2026, he was sentenced to two consecutive life terms plus 40 consecutive years in federal prison. A separate Minnesota prosecution is still pending; as of October 8, 2026, the state trial was scheduled to begin May 10, 2027.

Who is Vance Boelter?

Boelter is the Minnesota man at the center of the federal case over the June 14, 2025 attacks. The Justice Department’s initial charging announcement described him as 57 and from Green Isle, Minnesota, at the time of the charges; that is a dated age reference, not his current age. The Minnesota Judicial Branch identifies the separate state matter as State of Minnesota v. Vance Luther Boelter, case 27-CR-25-14999, in Hennepin County District Court.

What happened in the June 2025 attacks?

Federal prosecutors said the attacks involved the murders of Minnesota House Speaker Emerita Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark; the shootings of State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette; and the attempted shooting of the Hoffmans’ daughter, Hope. The state case also includes charges involving Representative Kristin Bahner, animal cruelty involving Gilbert Hortman, and impersonating a police officer.

What happened in the federal case?

Boelter pleaded guilty to federal charges on June 11, 2026. On July 23, 2026, the federal court sentenced him to two consecutive life terms plus 40 consecutive years in prison. These are the established outcome and sentence in the federal case.

What charges remain in Minnesota state court?

The state prosecution is separate from the completed federal case and remains pending. Hennepin County prosecutors list:

  • First-degree premeditated murder charges for Melissa and Mark Hortman.
  • Attempted first-degree murder charges involving John, Yvette, and Hope Hoffman and Representative Kristin Bahner.
  • A felony animal-cruelty charge involving Gilbert Hortman.
  • Impersonating a police officer.

The federal guilty plea and sentence do not resolve these state charges. Because the state case has not gone to trial, Boelter remains a defendant in that prosecution.

When is the state trial scheduled?

MPR News reported on October 8, 2026, that a judge had lifted a temporary gag order and that the state trial was scheduled to begin May 10, 2027. Court dates can change, so this is the reported schedule as of that date, not a guarantee that the trial will begin then.

Why the word “alleged” is no longer enough

“Alleged Minnesota shooter” reflects the language used while the case was at the charging stage in 2025. It is incomplete as a description of the current legal status: Boelter later pleaded guilty and was sentenced in federal court. The distinct state prosecution, however, is still unresolved. Any account should distinguish the federal disposition from the pending state charges.
