BC Jean Ballas is the professional name of singer-songwriter Brittany Jean Carlson, who is married to dancer, musician and performer Mark Ballas. She co-wrote “If I Were a Boy,” a hit recorded by Beyoncé, and she makes music with Ballas as the duo Alexander Jean.

Who BC Jean is

“BC Jean” is the stage name used by Brittany Jean Carlson. ABC’s biography of Mark Ballas identifies her as his wife and as the co-writer of “If I Were a Boy.” She is known as a songwriter first, and her public profile rests mainly on that credit and on the music she releases with her husband.

Her marriage to Mark Ballas and family

Parade’s profile of the couple reports that they married on November 25, 2016, at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu, California. The same profile says Ballas proposed the year before, with a Coldplay-themed proposal. That proposal account comes from Parade’s reporting and has not been independently confirmed, so treat it as a reported detail rather than an established one.

Parade also identifies the couple’s son as Banksi Wylde Ballas.

The “If I Were a Boy” songwriting credit

“If I Were a Boy” is the song that gives BC Jean her best-known credit. ABC describes it as a global hit recorded by Beyoncé and names Jean as one of its co-writers. Music Connection’s January 2016 coverage also names Toby Gad as a co-writer of the song, so the composition is shared rather than credited to Jean alone. Readers looking for a single authorship claim should not infer one from either source.

Alexander Jean: the duo’s music

BC Jean and Mark Ballas are the two members of Alexander Jean. Parts + Labor Records says the duo has released music since 2015. The releases that the sources identify are listed below. None of the sources reviewed for this article gives a release date for each item, so the table shows only what each source says about the release.

Release How the source describes it Source
Head High The duo’s debut EP AllMusic
Roses and Violets The duo’s debut single AllMusic
Coming Down The duo’s third EP Parts + Labor Records

Because the sources do not state a retail format or current availability for these releases, check the duo’s official channels or a streaming service for where a given title is currently offered.

What the stream figure and 2026 plans do and do not establish

ABC’s Mark Ballas biography says Alexander Jean has accumulated more than 200 million streams worldwide. That number appears in a biography page, not in an independently audited stream report, so it should be read as the figure the duo’s side has published rather than a verified total. The same biography says new music is forthcoming in 2026. That is a forward-looking statement. No confirmed release date for that music is established by the sources behind this article, and with 2026 now well under way, readers should check the duo’s official channels before relying on it.
