He made his big-screen debut in Venom: The Last Dance (2024), which Sony Pictures describes as the final film in its Venom trilogy, with Tom Hardy returning as Venom. Knull’s comic history is well documented by Marvel. His screen role in the film is less documented, so the sections below separate the two.
Who Knull is in Marvel Comics
Marvel’s official character profile, Knull | Character Close Up, calls him the “God of Symbiotes” and attaches three epithets to him: “The Abyss Made Flesh,” “The Destroyer of Stars,” and “The King in Black.” Those labels explain the character’s core idea. Knull is not a symbiote who happens to be powerful. He is the source the symbiotes come from.
His comic origin
According to Marvel’s profile, Knull predates the universe as we know it. Before the Celestials brought the “light of creation,” he was the darkness that surrounded existence. Marvel says he responded by waging war against cosmic gods, using living symbiote armor as his weapon. That origin is why Knull is treated as more than a villain in a single storyline. He sits at the beginning of the symbiote story rather than in the middle of it.
When Knull first appeared
Knull has two distinct first-appearance milestones in Marvel’s own material, and they are easy to confuse. Marvel identifies Venom (2018) #3 as his first full appearance. Earlier, Knull had a glimpse in Thor: God of Thunder #6, which Marvel’s Road to King in Black page lists as his first glimpse. The distinction matters: a glimpse shows the character without establishing him, while the Venom #3 appearance is where he is introduced in full.

How Knull connects to Venom
Venom’s symbiote is one of many symbiotes, and Knull is the figure who stands behind them. Marvel’s material presents him as a major enemy within the symbiote mythology rather than an isolated villain. The clearest comic example is the King in Black event, which Marvel frames as Knull’s invasion of Earth, carried out with an army of symbiote dragons.
Marvel’s background article on the lead-in to Absolute Carnage adds a second thread. In it, Knull tells Eddie Brock about the symbiotes’ origin through the Grendel symbiote, and the Church of the New Darkness uses a Grendel sample to resurrect Carnage. That backstory is useful if you want to understand how Knull’s influence reaches Venom’s own story, but it is secondary to the basic answer of who he is.

Knull in Venom: The Last Dance
Sony’s official page for Venom: The Last Dance confirms the film is the final entry in the trilogy. It credits Kelly Marcel with directing and writing the screenplay, based on a story by Marcel and Tom Hardy, and says Tom Hardy returns as Venom. Marvel’s June 2025 announcement confirms that Knull made his big-screen debut in the film.
Those sources establish Knull’s appearance in the film, and they position him as the story’s new major threat in the trilogy’s closing chapter. They do not provide a scene-by-scene synopsis, character dialogue, or a detailed account of what Knull does in each sequence. If you want to know exactly how the film uses him, watch the film itself. Sony’s and Marvel’s pages do not confirm any future appearances beyond this film, so avoid treating speculation about later stories as established.
