Luke Macfarlane’s partner is Hig Roberts, a former professional alpine skier who competed for the United States. Out identified Roberts as Macfarlane’s partner in a June 2023 report about the birth of their daughter, and revisited the family in a 2025 profile of Macfarlane. Roberts is a private figure outside those reports, so this article sticks to what those sources and the official skiing record establish.
Who Hig Roberts is
Hig Roberts is a former alpine skier. The International Ski and Snowboard Federation (FIS) lists him as an athlete for the United States, gives his birth year as 1991, and marks his athlete status as “Not active” in its database, accessed in 2026 (FIS athlete biography for Hig Roberts). The FIS profile also records his equipment brands and event results, which makes it the most reliable place to check his competition history.
Career as an alpine skier: three sources, three jobs
Public accounts of Roberts’s career come from sources that do different things. Keeping them separate prevents the magazine narrative from being presented as official record.

In short, the federation’s record and the national championship report are the sources to rely on for competition facts. The retirement year and the two-title count come from Out’s reporting, and they should be read as Out’s account. Roberts has been described as a former professional skier, and FIS’s “Not active” label does not on its own tell you when or why he stopped competing.

Family and relationship reporting
Out named Roberts as Macfarlane’s partner when it reported the birth of their daughter, Tess Eleanor Macfarlane, on June 4, 2023 (Out, June 22, 2023). That is the date the report gives, and it is the most specific family fact in the public record located for this article.
Out revisited the family in a 2025 profile, From wood to fatherhood, Luke Macfarlane carves a new mold as a gay lead. In that piece Macfarlane talks about fatherhood and describes Roberts as a co-parent. The profile also says Macfarlane declined to share many personal details about the relationship. Out reported this in 2025; it is the latest profile located, and it does not offer a complete current picture of the family.

Several things are not established by these sources: a wedding or engagement, when the relationship began, how the couple met, or how they divide parenting and living arrangements. Articles that fill those gaps are speculating.
Roberts on coming out and visibility in sport
In the 2023 Out interview, Roberts spoke about coming out and about representation in alpine skiing. Out reported that he came out in 2020. Two sentences from that interview, quoted as Out printed them:
